THE TEAM OF 1997

The return of Enzo Francescoli, the coming of the "Matador
of Temuco" José Marcelo Salas, and the excellent skills
displayed by Marcelo Daniel Gallardo, Sergio Angel Berti,
and Roberto Carlos Monserrat, gave birth to the new
"machine", which was not as bright as the one of the 50's,
but it managed to win the Libertadores Cup for the Second
time in the history of the club, and for the first time
ever in the history of the Argentinian football it won
three local tournaments in a row altogether with an
international cup, the Supercup.

THE TOURNAMENT BEFORE THE NEW MACHINE (IN SPANISH)...

To be remembered...

Hernán Jorge Crespo, responsible of the second conquest of
the Libertadores Cup. His two goals against the América
de Cali, gave River in 1996 the title of Latin America
Champion. The millionaire won that same honor 10 years ago.
Hernán Jorge Crespo, Leonardo Rubén Astrada and Enzo
Francescoli walk around the Monumental Stadium showing
the Latin America Champion Cup. After 10 years the
team finally reached the opportunity to become world
champion. The player of the Juventus Alessandro Del
Piero scored the goal that trashed River's dream of
world championship, which the team rightfully deserved.
The new millionaire "machine" won the only cup River
Plate was missing in its showcase, the Supercup. Enzo
Francescoli, Germán Adrián Ramón Burgos, and Sergio
Angel Berti are holding up the desired trophy.
At the end of the century River Plate left an unpaid debt,
to win against Boca Juniors at the local tournament. The
best result River got against Boca was 3 to 3, after being
losing 3 to 0. The Paraguayan Celso Rafael Ayala scored the
third goal with his head and tied a match that everybody
thought was long lost.
José Marcelo Salas, the "Matador", he scored two amazing
goals against the Santos at the Monumental Stadium (as
did Crespo against the América de Cali in 1996 to win the
Libertadores Cup), which gave the victory to Ramon's team
and the Supercup to the Champion of the Century!
