Angel Amadeo Labruna is BIG regarding River
Plate's
history because of many reasons. He has the
amazing
record of being the maximun scorer of the
millionaire
with 292 goals scored in official games. He
is only
beaten by the Paraguayan Arsenio Erico in
the history
of the argentinian football. He also is the
maximun
scorer of the classic encounters against Boca
Juniors
with 16 goals scored in official games. The
amount of
times he has worn River's uniform is also
impressive,
516 times. As if he could be missing something
to be
the greatest recordsman in River's history
he is also
the man who won the largest amount of tournaments
wearing the millionaire's uniform: he won
a total of
15 tournaments, 9 as a player and 6 as the
team's coach.
Labruna is undoubtely a man who belonged to
River from the
very beginning. He started his football player
days at the
club lower divisions and made his debut in
the main team on
June 18th 1939, against Estudiantes de la
Plata. During his
long career as a football player in River
Plate (which
lasted two decades) he won three local tournaments
in a row
for the first time ever in the club's history
from 1955 to
1957. In 1960 he finally left River to go
to the Chilean
team Rangers, after that he played in the
Urugayan team
Rampla Juniors, and finally he returned to
Argentina, but
this time to play in Platense, where he also
worked as the
team's coach.
As the team's coach Angel broke the curse
he left behind
as a player. The last tournament he won with
River in 1957
started a curse for River that lasted 18 years
without
being able to win a tournament. But there's
no evil capable
of lasting a hundred years, and for River
18 years were
more than enough, Angel took good care of
that. With an
unstoppable team he won the Metropolitan tournament
in
1975 and started a new golden era for the
"Band". He is
the coach who won more tournaments leading
River Plate,
including three tournaments in a row for the
second time
in the club's history from 1979 to 1980. He
also managed
Platense, Rosario Central (and won the National
tournament
in 1971), Argentinos Juniors, Lanús,
Racing Club, and
Talleres de Córdoba. River Plate's
recordsman died in
1984. However, every millionaire fan knows
that
THE GREAT ANGEL AMADEO LABRUNA IS ALWAYS PRESENT!
