The "Beto" Alonso started at the lower divisions
of River
Plate. He made his debut in the main team
in 1971, and since
then he was one of the most virtuous leading
men the "Band"
has ever had. He remained in Nuñez
up to 1982 when he was
transferred to Vélez Sársfield
(he stepped through the
French team Olympique du Marselle in 1976),
and he returned
to the millionaire ranks in 1984 to become
local champion
in 1986, Latin America champion in the same
year after
winning the Libertadores Cup, World Champion
in 1986 after
winning the Intercontinental Cup, and once
again Latin
America champion in 1987 after winning the
Interamerican
Cup. He left his football career in 1987 wearing
River
Plate's colours on his chest.
Perhaps this is the most famous goal Norberto
Osvaldo
Alonso has ever scored, the one he scored
with his head
and with an orange ball against Boca Juniors.
Altogether
in River he scored 149 goals, and he is the
fifth maximun
scorer of all times in the club's history.
Among his
greatest achievements wearing River Plate's
uniform are
being a player of the millionaire team that
won three
tournaments in a row for the second time ever
in the
history of the "Band", and being part of the
Argentinian
national team which won the World Cup in 1978.
As the
team's coach he managed River Plate in 1989
for a very
short period of time.
