ARIEL ARNALDO ORTEGA

Place of Birth: Ledesma, Province of Jujuy, Argentina
Titles won with River Plate:

* Libertadores de América Cup 1996
The "Burrito" Ortega started at the lower divisions
of the Ledesma Club, located in Libertador General
San Martín, where he finally made it to the main
main team. He was transferred to River Plate shortly
after that, where he began playing in the fourth
division. When Daniel Alberto Passarella became the
team's coach, he made it to the first division of
the millionaire. Using his talent with the ball he
soon became the leading man of the new "machine" of
the end of the century. He was part of the team led
by the "Tolo" Américo Rubén Gallego in 1994 which
won the Apertura tournament without losing a match,
and later on in 1996 he became Latin America champion.
Early in 1997 he was transferred to the Spanish team
Valencia, where he was unable to display all of his
skills because of his fights with the team's coach,
and finally he left to the Italian team Sampdoria,
where he carried the bargain of helping a team
without remarkable players to stay in the first
division of the Italian football. This was a thing
he was unable to do and nowadays it is most likely
he'll be leaving the Sampdoria, maybe to return to
River Plate, it's a fat chance, but there is a
certain possibility that shouldn't be ruled out.
Ortega is also a core member inside the Argentinian
national team. He was part of the teams which played
the World Cup USA '94, and France '98, he won the
Panamerican Championship in Mar del Plata in 1995,
and he was runner-up at the Olympic games in 1996.
He is nowadays part of the team that will play the
last America Cup of this century in 1999 in Paraguay.
