JOSE MARCELO SALAS
Date of Birth: December 24th 1974
Place of Birth: Temuco,
Chile
Titles won with River Plate:
* Opening 1996
* Closing 1997
* Opening 1997
* Supercup 1997
The "Matador of Temuco" José Marcelo
Salas, started his
remarkable career as a football player in
1994 in the
Chilean team Universidad de Chile and won
two Chilean
tournaments in a row in 1994 and 1995. He
came across
River Plate during the semifinals of the Libertadores
Cup. From that moment on, the millionaire's
coach Ramón
Angel Díaz, wanted to bring him to
his team. However in
what could be a strange twist of life, Salas
arrived to
Boca Juniors first, where he remained for
one day and
was rejected because he wasn't considered
a skilled
player. So River Plate saw his chance and
took it, the
"Matador of Temuco" proved the club's decision
right.
He made his debut on September 15th 1996 against
Huracán,
a match River Plate won 3 to 2.
Within the millionaire ranks he won three
local
tournaments in a row, for the third time in
the
history of the club, and his goals made him
the
maximun responsible of the achievement of
the
only cup the club was missing in its showcase,
the Supercup. Two shots were more than enough
to give River the desired trophy. He had to
wait
for Julio Ricardo Cruz to leave the team to
earn
his place among the team. So much were his
goals
and so important all of them that he was finally
transferred to the Italian team Lazio in early
1998, which paid for his pass a price record
in
the history of the Argentinian football market.
With Lazio he won the Recup of Europe against
the Mallorca and was one step away of winning
the Italian "Scudetto". He is a member of
the
Chilean national team and he played during
the
World Cup of France '98, and he will be playing
the America Cup in 1999 in Paraguay.
MARCELO DANIEL GALLARDO
Date of Birth: January
18th 1976
Place of Birth: Merlo,
Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina
Titles won with River Plate:
* Opening 1993
* Opening 1994
* Opening 1996
* Closing 1997
* Opening 1997
* Libertadores de América Cup 1996
* Supercup 1997
The "Muñeco" Gallardo, is one of the
most virtuous
players River Plate has nowadays. As a young
boy he
started playing football in a small club from
his
town called Nahuel, from there he went to
test his
skills to River Plate, where he was accepted
and
he started playing at the lower divisions.
On April
18th 1993 he made his debut in the millionaire
team
against Newell's Old Boys de Rosario, in a
match
River won 2 to 0. He was part of the team
led by
the "Tolo" Américo Rubén Gallego
in 1994 which won
the Apertura tournament without losing a match.
But
his moment of glory came when the "Burrito"
Ortega
left the team, it was then when Ramón
Angel Díaz
gave him the chance to be the leader of the
team,
and he answered him showing off his talent
all
over the stadiums, becoming the leader of
the new
"machine" of the end of the century, and using
his
skills to win three local tournaments in a
row and
the Supercup.
Marcelo Daniel Gallardo and José Marcelo
Salas
had to wait until Ariel Arnaldo Ortega and
Julio
Ricardo Cruz left the team to earn a place
on it
for themselves, and they sure took advantage
of
the opportunity they received, using all of
their
skills and wisdom to win the tournaments they
played with River Plate.
