He is the most remembered goalkeeper in the
history of the
millionaire, he started his career in Quilmes,
a short time
later he was transferred to Racing Club where
he beat the
record of saved penalty shots in 1972. The
following year,
when the great Amadeo Raúl Carrizo
left River Plate, the
goalkeeper's place showed a void very difficult
to fill for
everyone except for the "Pato" Fillol. During
the 11 years
he was the goalkeeper of the millionaire he
made the fans
sure they wouldn't miss Amadeo. Besides, with
Fillol as the
goalkeeper, River finally won another tournament
after 18
years without winning any. And once the team
won the first
one, many more followed including three local
tournaments
in a row for the second time in the history
of the club.
From River he was transferred to the Spanish
team Atlético
Madrid, and after passing through the Brazilian
team
Flamengo, he came back to Argentina, but this
time as the
goalkeeper of Argentinos Juniors. He went
to Racing Club
to win the first Supercup in 1988. He finished
his career
in Vélez Sársfield saying goodbye
inside the Monumental
Stadium with an enormous cheer of the millionaire
fans.
Among his enormous achievements, the "Pato"
was
River's (and Argentinian's) first goalkeeper
to
become World Champion in 1978 World Cup. He
was
the Argentinian national team's goalkeeper
in
other ocassions including the team that played
the World Cup of Spain '82. He was the goalkeeper
with more presences in River Plate behind
Amadeo
Raúl Carrizo. He was hoping to finish
his career
wearing the millionaire's colours, but he
had to
conform himself with finishing his days as
a
football player inside River Plate's stadium
but
defending Vélez Sarfield Colours.
