Your webmaster missed the first half of this game so this game report has been supplemented with information from the London Free Press.
It was another example of ugly, poorly executed football that worked out okay. Another win. But unless the Mustangs can pull up their socks the next game against Waterloo will be a different story. In short, Mike O'Biren has got to learn to throw a football with some semblance of accuracy. Head coach Larry Haylor has got to start calling plays that work.
Here are the details. The London Free Press reports that the Mustangs were in control of the game from the start. That's easy when your competition is not much better than a high school team. The Toronto quarterback had no business being out there.
Here is the story directly from the Free Press:
"The Mustangs defence, burnt for 29 and 30 points in Western's first two games, presented a usually high-powered offence with a number of golden opportunities.
Defensive halfback Adam McLeod picked off the first pass of the game by Blues quarterback Mark Dienesch, giving the Mustangs the ball at their own 48-yard line.
Two failed plays later, the Mustangs punted.
Jamie Ewart grabbed Dienesch's second attempt and ran it back to the Toronto 26.
Five plays later, Mustang rookie place-kicker Guilio Fricano booted the first of his four field goals, a 12-yarder, to give Western a 3-0 lead.
Defensive tackle Blaine Palinsky picked off Dienesch on the final play of the first quarter at the Blues' 48.
Three plays later, Western's quarterback-punter Michael O'Brien booted a 64-yard single.
The Mustangs scored just 16 points -- including a 17-yard touchdown from O'Brien to Disley following Jeff Heslop's recovery of a bad snap at the Toronto 18 early in the second quarter -- off six turnovers."
Part way into the fourth quarter the Mustangs managed to engineer their best drive of the day consisting of 6 plays over 102 yards. Fabian Rayne ran 20 yards for the touchdown.
The stats. Total offense was 384 yards. Tailback Scott Crawley had 133 yards on 17 carries. Full back Fabian Rayne had 105 yards on 10 carries. Quarterback Mike O'Brien completed only 9 of 21 pass attempts for 92 yards.
Notes
- Tailback Mike Laslo, returning from injury got in the game for 2 or 3 plays in the fourth quarter only to reinjure his knee.
- Fabian Rayne looks real good. Keep giving him the ball and the Mustangs will be fine.
- Al Philbrick, Western's running man, was hit hard out of bounds after a pass and run play. I've never seen the training staff move so fast. He'll be fine.
