Western 10, York 8
Due to family considerations over the long weekend, your webmaster was unable to attend the game personally. However, we were able to obtain basic information from others who were there and from published reports.
It appears that this game is another case of a win is a win and we'll take it. But it wasn't pretty. York began the game receiveing Western's kick-off and proceded to march down the field on a 7 1/2 minute, 16 play drive. Things weren't looking good. But as an omen for York the promising drive was stopped and the Mustang defence finally held limiting the damage to only a field goal. Western was held scoreless in the first half while having only 22 offensive plays (including 4 punts) and only 5 first downs (one due to a York penalty.)
It looks like a classic case of a letdown after the big game. Things couldn't get much higher after the big homecoming win against Waterloo and it is often difficult to get up for the next one. Hopefully this will serve as a wake-up call. Western has three regular season games remaining, all against teams well down in the standings (including next weeks rematch with a poor Toronto Varsity Blues squad.)
Here are a few numbers. Tailback Scott Crawley carried 17 times for 109 yards and the game's only touchdown. Full back Fabian Rayne carried 8 times for only 30 yards. York place kicker Jesse Phillips hit only only 2 of 5 field goal attempts.
Notes
- By all accounts, the Mustang defence played very well.
- As happens often, ON TV (Channel 11) bumped the scheduled Western telecast in favour of one of the Waterloo based teams. Western at York was originally scheduled but was replaced with the Waterloo vs. McMaster game. Anyone who follows OUA football on Channel 11 knows that there is decided leaning towards Waterloo based teams (Laurier and Waterloo) on their broadcasts.
- York is not as bad as their record may indicate. They have lost three games by a total of only 5 points.
- York's all-time record against the Mustangs is 1-24.
