Western 43, Toronto 27

When the University of Toronto Blues came out from under the Little Stadium stands for the start of the game they had the look of a team defeated. Even before the opening kick-off. That idea was reinforced after Western's first offense drive ended in a touchdown. But things aren't always as they seem.

At the end of the first quarter, the score was 21-7 in favour of Toronto. After that first good Mustang drive, the Blues pushed the Western defence all over the field while scoring three consecutive touchdowns. It was ugly. But the Mustangs offence didn't give up, scoring 17 unanswered points of their own. At the half the score was 24-21 for Western.

The game was full of mistakes by both sides often resulting directly in major scores. Included was a 20 yard TD run by linebacker Justin Anania to tie the score at 21 prior to the half. Later in the game wide receiver Dan Disley, after taking a pass from Mike O'Brien was caught by Toronto defenders as he approached the goal. As he leaped, arms outstretched for the goal line the ball slipped free and bounced loose in the end zone. Fortunately Mustang receiver James Prescott, who was trailing the play, was able to pick up the ball for the touchdown.

Notes

  • For the first time this season, Western used it's secret weapon. Quarterback Mike O'Brien, who is also the punter, lined up to punt on a third down play and threw over the middle for a first down completion.

  • Jeff Proctor dressed as place kicker instead of Giulio Fricano. Proctor had five converts, two field goals and two singles.

  • The playoff picture is beginning to clear up with two weeks left to go. Western is guaranteed a home date and can't finish lower than second. Windsor, York and Toronto are officially eliminated. If Guelph loses this Saturday to Western they also will be eliminated.
