Bobbie, "The Weather Girl", getting ready to fly in a Loach helicopter with the 199th Light Infantry Brigade. Photo taken in South Vietnam about 1968.
"My favorite aircraft - the greatest flying thrill - the Loach - which until I was introduced, figured had to be some sort of bug! When we flew around, no doors, I could reach out and almost touch tree tops. Andy, the Information Officer for the 199th, frequently picked me up in Saigon. We'd drive to their headquarters outside Saigon, where I would board the Loach for trips to small camps. Much to my chagrin, occasionally the pilots would swoop down over roofless shower and toilet stalls -- I don't know who was more shocked -- all I could do was giggle over the men's predicament as they laughed at the sight of me up in the air peering down. This scenario reaffirmed my belief that laughter is a good tonic -- which could still be had, despite the daily, tragic circumstances that surrounded our troops in Vietnam."...Bobbie
