Films

Director Chris Columbus is working on a series of films based on the Harry Potter books. Working closely with J.K. Rowling, these films are sure to delight Potter fans all over the world, and bring Harry to a whole new audience.

The first, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, is set for release in November 2001, with more to follow soon.

Unfortunately, Ms Rowling's work on the film has meant a slight delay in the next Harry Potter book, which will probably come out sometime in 2002.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - Pictures

Harry is played by 11-year-old Daniel Radcliffe, who featured as young David in the recent BBC adaptation of David Copperfield. He is joined by Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as Ron and Hermione.

Hagrid is played to great effect by Robbie Coltrane. Huge and hairy, Hagrid towers over the rest of the cast.

Veteran actor Richard Harris, recently seen as the Emperor Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator, is Professor Albus Dumbledore, the greatest magician of the age, and headmaster of Hogwarts.

Alan Rickman has made a career out of playing over-the-top villains, so he was the obvious choice for Harry's nemesis, Potions master Severus Snape.

Dame Maggie Smith is yet another illustrious thespian to join the staff of Hogwarts. As Professor Minerva McGonagall, she is the deputy headmistress and head of Gryffindor, Harry's house.

Emma Watson and Rupert Grint are perfect as Hermione and Ron, here seen resplendent in their Hogwarts uniforms. Hermione has a pile of books - as usual.

Harry sits in the Gryffindor dorm, his faithful owl Hedwig by his side.
