My mom was born in 1932 to a poor family who pretty well lived off the
land. Farming and logging was the main way of feeding the family of 12
children, there were 13 but one child passed away in infancy. I think
my mom saw some pretty hard times. She lived back in the woods in a
place called Harrisville, NB. I remember her telling me of her 5 mile
walks to school. About 10 years ago we walked back in the woods to where
she played as a child and althought all that was left were caved in
foundations and rotted wood, there were still the apple trees that she
said grew so sweet an apple, it was a touching moment for us to be
there.
A few years back mom had done some crayon drawings for the children, I
thought they were very nice and she had told me she was always drawing
and colouring as a child. Last year I bought her some paints and brushes
and prepared some masonite and asked her to put her memories to pictures.
She was hesitant at first and said she could never paint as good as
me. I was thrilled with her work and soon collectors of my art were
after moms paintings, some say mom's work will become more collectable
than mine and that suits me just fine. I am proud of my mom and her work
and I love how happy she is when I see her paint :)
We recently did a show together in Toronto called "Family Folk" It was a
great sucess, mom sold 7 paintings opening nite and the gallery bought
another 5. I'm proud to include mom on our site and I hope you enjoy her
work. In time I will include more of Mom's paintings.
