Advance Planning For Your Campout Aboard Pampanito

THE SS 383 OVERNIGHT PROGRAM

An overnight stay aboard the Pampanito is an adventure that a Scout (and his parents) will remember for a lifetime. Our unit (Pack 215) returns to the Pampanito each year. We consider our annual overnighter aboard it to be a 'staple' item of our yearly program. As with any Scout overnighter, advance trip planning is key to a successful and fun camping experience.

PLANNING YOUR CAMPOUT

Making Reservations
The first step is making your reservations. The Pampanito's annual reservation log fills up early, and overnight stays must be booked well in advance ( Friday and Saturday slots must typically be reserved at least12 months in advance. ) To schedule your group, please contact:

    Pampanito Reservations
    (415) 292-6664

For more information, write to:

    Pampanito Overnight Program
    National Maritime Museum Association
    Post Office Box 470310
    San Francisco, CA 94147-0310

When calling, be prepared to give your unit name/number/council, address, and the total number of kids and adults attending. Within one week you will recieve a confirmation notice for the dates requested. This must be returned within six (6) weeks with your deposit check. Failure to do so will result in the loss of your reserved date.

Deposit
The National Marine Museum Association requires a $50.00 non-refundable deposit within 45 days of making your reservation, to be applied to the total fee for your group. Important! Failure to remit this deposit on time will nullify your reservations.

Cost
The cost for taking part in this program in 1997 is $20.00 per person for weekend nights and $14.00 for weeknights.

Youth Protection
The National Marine Museum Association requires a minimum 1:6 ratio of adults to children under age 18. But, as you are aware, the BSA has stricter supervision requirements for Cub Scouts. Each Cub MUST be escorted by at least one parent! Parents are accommodated at the same fee as other campers.

Tour Permits and Insurance
The Pampanito staff will require copies of your group's 'Certificate of Insurance' as well as an approved 'Local Tour Permit' indicating the tour is officially sanctioned by your Council. The National Marine Museum Association holds 'Certificates of Insurance' for many Councils in Northern California. Call to see if they have your Council's. Adults attending the overnight stay will also be required to sign a 'Hold Harmless' form when they arrive.

Bunk Planning
The submarine has 48 bunks available for group members to sleep in; thirty-six (36) bunks in the Crew's Quarters and twelve (12) bunks in the Officers' Quarters. with a minimum group size of 25. To avoid confusion, it is a good idea to assign each individual to a bunk prior to your arrival. To assist with this, you will be sent a 'program guide book' after making your reservation that will include 'Bunk planning' forms.

Develop Your Plan Of The Day
Besides providing details about the program, the 'program guide book' will also include a suggested 'Plan of the Day.' It will provide a sample framework for activities while your group is on board. Your stay should not only to be fun, but a learning experience as well. To that end, the Plan of the Day will help you to divide up responsibilities among your group so that they feel they are a real ship's crew. We documented a shipboard task for each Officer (adult) and printed them out on "TOP SECRET - EYES ONLY" letterhead prior to our arrival. Because some of the tasks require more committment than others, we handed them out lottery style to assure fairness. These tasks included:

  • 1st Watch Officer - 2330 to 0130
  • 2nd Watch Officer - 0130 to 0330
  • 3rd Watch Officer - 0330 to 0530
  • 4th Watch Officer - 0530 to 0730
  • Video Operations Officer - Video tape selection, operation, clean-up
  • Kitchen Police Officer - Responsible for meal coordination and clean-up
  • 'Head' Engineering Officer - Trains and checks out each camper on ship's head (toilet)
  • Protocol Officer - Responsible for reveille and flag ceremony on conning tower deck
  • Training Officer - Responsible for Cub Submarine Qualification completions
  • Ship-Shape Officer - Responsible for coordination of all submarine cleaning activities

Meals
Your group will be responsible for furnishing their own meals. Click here for some ideas.
