It has been accepted for years by most Foster researchers that the immigrant of the southern Fosters was a Richard Foster, son of Sir. Robert Foster and Miss Isham of England, who sailed from London on the ship Safety in 1635, arriving in Virginia in the fall. That he first married an Ann and then a Sussan Garnett and became the father of at least two sons, Robert and John. New information has conclusively shown that this Richard Foster was transported by his step-father, Bartholomew Hoskins, ancient planter. Bartholomew had married Richard's mother, Mrs. Dorcus Foster, widow of two children, in England. We do not know the first husband of Dorcus Foster Hoskins, but was not Sir Robert Foster.

If the immigrant is a Richard Foster it had to be the one who patented land in Gloucester County, Virginia and renewed this patent in 1662 and married Sussan Garnett ca. 1642. We have no proof or indication that this Richard Foster is our immigrant or that he married Sussan Garnett.

Some researchers believe our immigrant was a James Foster who was living in 1678 in Kingston Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia and was a close neighbor of the Garnetts. We know that the Fosters and Garnetts intermarried. It is also intriguing that Robert named his first two sons, Robert and James, and not Robert and Richard, which is English tradition. Until there is more documentation, it is best to leave our immigrant as Richard or James Foster. Notes

Thomas moved with his underage children to Spotsylvania County as early as 1745. There, he was known as Thomas, the surgeon. Somewhere along the line, he must have received training as a physician. He practiced medicine in Spotsylvania Countay for a decade, then in Cumberland County, north of Amelia County. He continued to practice medicine after he moved to St. James Santee parish in Craven County, SC.

There is some confusion on the children of Thomas and Elizabeth. Dr. B.G. Foster lists Thomas Jr., George, William, James, John, Alexius and Jane on his FGS. The ones listed on my FGS are from Dr. Foster's book.

Died in Rawley Parish, Amelia Co., VA. There is a conflicting birth date. Some sources give 1724, others 1718. It is known he was married twice, but it is not confirmed which wife was the mother of which children. Thomas was advanced in years by the time of the American Revolution. He did his part by furnishing supplies to the Continental Army and occasionally serving as wagoneer (there are five references to Toams Foster being paid for supplies, provisions and wagon hire in Virginia Military Records--pgs. 467,543,557,597,640). Will was written on March 11, 1786 and recorded on March 23, 1786.

1870 census lists an Eliza Foster (34). Could this be the widow of one of Moses' sons? Or, is this the same person as Elijah S.(25) in the 1860 Census. And is this the same person as Sarah (13) in the 1850 Census. Need to research this further.

Family legend has it that Moses had five sons killed in the Civil War. We know certainly only of Joseph's death. But, a B.H. Foster was killed at Petersburg from the 27th SCVI, Company B. Also, we know that Moses sons William, Luther and Joseph served in the Palmetto Sharpshooters. Thomas J. (James?)served in Palmetto Sharpshooters and was killed at Frazier's Farm. There was a J.J. Foster (Judson J.?) who died of disease while serving in the 27th Regiment S.C.V., company K. We know that William was wounded at Wildernss. Maybe it was four died and one wounded. Hope to find out for sure.

...Lee married Annie Caldwell Foster.

Annie was 18, the daughter of Gabriel and Susan WIngo Foster. The Fosters and Wingos were prominent in Spartanburg County. Gabriel had five brothers killed in the CIvil War. Gabriel, himself, attempted to go to war. He picked up his hunting rifle and walked 5 miles to Spartanburg to try to enlist in the Confederate Army. The recruiting officer asked his age, he said, "I'm 15 years old." The officer said, "You go back home, son, and help grow a garden."

One brother of Gabriel was first man in medical history to have a bullet removed from his brain. He lived to recover and go back into the war. He was killed by amini ball going into his heart.

Rev. Landrum writes this a little differently. He says that Joseph had the mini ball go through his head and exit just below the ear. He says that Joseph was killed in Virginia at Blackwater by being cut in two by a cannon ball.
