Notes for Simon LEISTER

FROM LANFORD-LISTER CONNECTION BY NOEL L. BRUNSON
According to Dr. Howard's book, Simon was a medical doctor and became
very wealthy, owning about 1500 acres on both side of Middle Tyger.
According to one report in the family, he owned a number of slaves and
his daughter Margaret seemed to be accustomed to a high living standard.
The Simon A. Lister property was in the Gowens-ville area and Lister Road
is probably located near where the old home place was (see Note on
Lanford and Lister Places, Appendix 7).
Simon's Will was dated Nov. 15, 1866 and was probated on Dec. 7, 1866, so
he must have died between those dates. (See Copy of Will of Dr. Simon A.
Lister, Appendix 6.) He mentioned his children as follows: Moses H.
Lister; Mary C. Wingo; Carter C. Lister; Rosalinda Morrow; Manurva Ann
Lister Morrow, Jane Elizabeth Lister Henson, David C. Lister, and
Margaret P. Lanford. The Family Bible was given to Jane E. Henson.
Certain land was to be sold with the proceeds to be used to keep up their
graves in the cemetery and to build a stone wall around them. Moses and
David, along with Rev. T. J. Earle, were to be Executors. The Will was
witnessed by G. R. Ponder, John Barnett and Melinda Brooks. The Estate
was in adminis-tration until April 14, 1877, when the Executors were
discharged. Family tradition is to the effect that he was buried in the
Lister Family Cemetery, and there is some evidence of this, but certainty
is lacking (see the Note Concerning Lister Family Cemetery, Appendix 5).
