Foster's Tavern Spartanburg, S.C.

Foster's Tavern in Spartanburg, S.C., is quite an historical old building. It was built by Anthony Foster, Jr. between 1807 and 1812 and is the oldest brick home in Spartanburg County. The bricks for the home were made by slaves out of the clay that is common to the area. Slaves and horses trampled mud, which was then placed in wooden molds and set in the sun to dry. Kilns completed the long drying process. It is reported that John C. Calhoun, US vice-President under Andrew Jackson, often stayed at Foster's Tavern.
