I anticipate that tomorrow evening we will host a guest, Dr. James Quigley, Executive Director of New Jersey Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability. Jim will explain what the state college and university sector has done to promote a sustainable New Jersey. We will hear from Dr. Quigley after covering chapters 9 through 12 of Natural Capitalism. Whew!

On Thursday, we have use of the accounting computer lab until 7:30 P.M. We will return to C-111 to end Natural Capitalism. Please access a web document that I have prepared to help search, navigate, assess, and cite web pages, that I call, appropriately, SearchLight.

June 1, Edition #2

Welcome back! Some good news: We have secured a more pleasant room, C-111, which is more spacious and has a view. If growth is good, I have more good news: We have now 17 students, up from the 9 registered when I finalized the syllabus. Structure develops with growth and we will discuss some of the practical implications in the second segment of our class this evening, the workshop mode. Here is our agenda for this evening, Thursday, June 1.

Segment I: I will lead a discussion of the Introduction to Braden Allenby's Industrial Ecology and move into the Preface, Introduction, and Chapter 2, Guidelines from Sachs, et al., Greening the North. Class notes are available. (Okay, it is not an easy read, but this seminal work is basic to the field. Besides, last year's book was even tougher!)

Segment II: We will finally form groups and we will begin the assignment of reporting for the next week. Here are some guidelines:

The groups must form now. We should choose membership and appoint two key staffers: project leader and editor. After some thought, I suggest that we have four groups for our projects:

  1. Green Marketing: Ann Marie has suggested this, Lauren has signed on and the topic is terrific. Ann Marie has provided an outline, which I have copied and will distribute in class tonight.
  2. Renewable Energy Business: The prospects for companies in this field, the demand and supply factors. The focus might be on the industry and some leading firms. Several students have indicated an interest in energy and this sector is fundamental.
  3. Times Square Redevelopment: This major revitalization of tourism in New York seems to be a win-win for the city and the developers. Some displacement has occurred, but this might be appropriate.
  4. Interface, Inc: This leading floor-covering company ($1.5 billion per year) has become the leader in sustainable business and is featured in our next book, Natural Capitalism. The CEO, Ray Anderson, recently attended a conference at Rutgers organized by Jim Quigley from Ramapo College. Ray Anderson's vision and leadership astonished me! This is my top choice for case study, which should work for you, too.

We must also plan for our presentations, which start next Tuesday June 6. Here is how I figure we should proceed:
