Steven Williams portrays the recurring character "X" on FOX's macabre hit series, The X-Files. Menace and mystery are central to X's character and Williams plays X with a powerful, ambiguous quality. Of his character Williams said, "X is a survivor who, unlike his counterparts, still has a strong will to live and no desire to sacrifice himself for the cause. This trait makes him one of the X-Files' deadliest components". The X-Files follows two FBI agents -- Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) -- as they tangle with extraterrestrials, vampires, serial killers, psychics, mutants and nefarious government officials. The X-Files creator and executive producer, Chris Carter, introduced the character X in the second season. When no one is willing to answer the FBI agents' questions, Mulder tapes an X to his front window, summoning the mysterious Mr. X. He steps out of the shadows long enough to help agents Mulder and Scully when they are ensconced in government conspiracies and danger is eminent. Williams makes the most of those moments. His lip curls and his deep voice resonates with a controlled dangerous quality. The X-Files continuously surprises, and captivates viewers. Part of that intrigue can be attributed to the intensity Williams brings to the role of X. His steely gaze and imposing presence are magnified by the dark shadows that surround him. "X is not a man to mess with." Williams says, "He's a man who takes care of business and I think people respond to that. X is fun to play because his true motives remain unknown." One of the most popular questions asked by X-File fans is, "How does Mr. X know that Mulder has put an X on the window?" William's response, "He lives in the planter outside Mulder's window!" The X-Files is filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and premiered on September 10, 1993. It is broadcast in North America (United States, Canada, and Mexico), but can also be seen in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.
"Steven Williams,
in his role as "Mr. X", has created a
wonderfully mysterious and enigmatic character filled
with intensity and passion. His presence on screen leaves
us wanting to see more." "Steven Williams
role in the X-Files isn't exactly one an actor would
dream of: He pops up, mutters a few words to Mulder, then
he disappears again. But the fact that his appearances
are among the most memorable in the series should tell
you just how great an actor he is. Steven Williams fills
this rather small yet very important part with a unique
presence and determination. As soon as you see
"X" coming out of the shadows, you know he
means business. All this makes "X" different
from Deep Throat, and the character a success." "I credit Steven
Williams for being able to use his voice, facial
expressions and body language to portray a rounded and
complex character who never quite does the expected. I
always look forward to his next appearance!" Back to MIB Central Control |
