EDNA MAYO

FOURTH COVER OF THE BOOK "THE LIVES I LIVED"

A novel? An autobiography? A narration? This book is a bit of each of them. With the simple language of a radio broadcaster, Edna Mayo narrates - faking no pudeur - even innermost details of her soul: the life, the lovers, the adventures and frustrations of the romantic, anguished heart of a dreamer. Because of this, the book is a novel with real characters.
In this book, we can find the plots and dilemmas of her day-by-day life at work, with her family, in her professional life, - as a woman, mother, daughter, friend, lover, artist, dubber, and TV and radio announcer- that is why it is also a biography. Nevertheless, with the same simple, rich details, it is a report in "Alpha Rhythm". Under the supervision of a parapsychologist, she takes part in several sessions of regression, in search of her present and past identity. However, the greatest value of this piece does not lie on the literary aspects, as a novel, autobiography or narration, but on the grand literary power of identification. The reader (he or she) will recognize aspects in common with the life of this common woman: flesh and blood, coming from a modest life in a small town in the interior of the country, to the fame in the media, a woman that utterly reveals herself telling the real story of her unusual life.
This book is a brave labor of love, a piece of wisdom, and a model of strength and greatness. It could be a guide for those who lead a simple life, search for the Truth, and find It.

INTRODUCTION

Each human life is an adventure from which we can learn lessons that help us make our existence better.
Edna is one among many souls that just cannot conform to plain material life. Not giving a second thought, she starts a deeper search. It is not easy to find the strength to expose our lives, emotions, weaknesses and fantasies and face a hostile, uncertain world, just like all of us who live in a foreign country. Leaving behind a stable life and an enviable job in her homeland, just to follow her intuition - not knowing what the future would bring - and moreover, writing a book which discloses her inner self, well, that is something that requires courage.
Edna is someone who seeks for self-knowledge, the answers to questions about life and the surrounding circumstances. I am completely sure that her adventurous journey does not end in the pages of this book, because now the answers are coming to this restless seeker.
These pages have lessons within, and they are suitable for all of us. Each reader can recognize aspects of their lives in some aspects of Edna's life. After all, we all take part in this collective adventure called Bodily Life - and our dreams, dramas, happiness, sadness and opportunities seem to be alike, somehow. It would really be good if each of us could leave our experience and stories to the posterity. Sharing a real story through reading, a story where there are no super-heroes, where happiness and sadness are real, where the Prince and the Princess do not live happily ever after, is much better than any fictional story. May Strength be with you, Edna! - Forever...

Chapter I

THE FIRST CONTACT

When I opened the front door and saw that person, I felt like shutting the door on him saying that it was a mistake, that he had gotten the wrong address. I was so curious and I wished so much to unravel that situation, but he looked so young... After all, someone with great reputation whom I highly considered had recommended him. I should give him some credit. He himself said to me later: " I know I 'm young, but it doesn't matter how old I am. What really counts is my experience, the skills I've acquired to develop my work. The sole fact of being 40 or 50 years old doesn't make anyone wise or experienced."
I opened the door and asked him in. As it was a scalding day here in New York - 105°Fahrenheit - I promptly offered him a glass of water and showed him to the bathroom so he could wash himself. I also offered a clean T-shirt, once his long-sleeved shirt was soaked wet, but he declined the offer, saying he was fine. When he came out of the bathroom, we sat at the kitchen's table, near the front door. I was curious so, before anything else I said to him: "Look, I have only one question to ask: Is it possible to get in trance and not coming to oneself anymore?
His answer was clear enough to tranquilize me. He said nobody could get in a conscious trance (Delta rhythm). I would be in Alpha rhythm and I would follow his voice's command. I would be awaken all the time, and I should not fear falling in a deep sleep.
He took a drawing board out of his briefcase, put a sheet on it, took a pen, and asked me to tell him a little about my life, since the moment I first felt rejected by my parents. It was my first experience with an analyst. The strangest of it all was that I never expected that question, but the answer came out easily, as if I had rehearsed. I started to tell my story, from the moment I was sent to a boarding school.
We already lived in Belo Horizonte, in a poor neighborhood. Suddenly, I realized I was going to be away from my brothers, my parents, my schoolmates, the neighbors with whom I would play, the flower bed I used to lovingly look after... I myself had planted the sprouts after stealing them from my neighbors' gardens. My mother, of course, wouldn't approve of that. But that was how I liked my flowers: stolen. I thought that, if they were stolen, they would blossom more beautifully than if they were bought or given to me. I would specially miss that huge orchard with a brook in the back, the mango trees, the orange trees, the banana plants, and all the other fruits and vegetables.
