George William Brown was born 13 Oct 1812 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was elected Mayor of Baltimore and served from 1860 until 12 Sep 1861, when he was arrested by yankee authorities and imprisoned during the War for Southern Independence. When Southern states began seceding from the union, yankee Army units began passing through Baltimore on their way to Washington. This enraged the folk of Baltimore, many of whom believed they were there to occupy the city and prevent Maryland from seceding also. They rioted against the yankee soldiers who fired upon the crowd indiscriminately, killing 12 civilians. The next month, yankee troops occupied the city for the rest of the war. George, as mayor, the police chief, several commissioners, and a number of citizens were arrested for their alleged participation in the riot and suspected Southern sympathizers, including Francis Scott Key's (author of the "Star Spangled Banner") grandson and a number of state legislators, were held without charges in direct violation of the US Constition...nothing unusual during the war when thousands of civilians were arrested by the military...including a US Congressman from Indiana.
This was common practice by the yankees during the War -- to arrest any and all Southern sympathizers. After the War, George served as a delegate to the Maryland State Constitutional Convention of 1867. He served as a Municipal Judge of Baltimore in 1872. George died 8 Sep 1890.
