JERRY D. BROWN
Owned Chevrolet Dealership in Metro Atlanta
BUFORD, Ga.-- Jerry D. Brown died at his home here in the Atlanta suburb of Buford 13 Nov. of cancer at age 63.
Jerry was born in Gwinnett County and grew up in Buford, graduating from Dacula High School in 1951. He entered the automobile business that year when he began work on the assembly line at the General Motors plant in suburban Doraville, where he worked for eight years. All that time, he dreamed of owning his own dealership.
He left the assembly line in 1959 and took his first sales job at Ford's Gwinnett Sales & Service, a dealership in Lawrenceville where he developed his talent and set sales records. He worked there nine years and was promoted from salesman to sales manager and then general manager. "He sold more Ford's there in a year's time than any other salesman in the U.S." said Gary D. Brown, his son.
In 1968, Jerry bought out a Chevrolet dealership in Buford. The previous year, the dealership had sold 138 new cars. That year, the 3-acre site employed 15 people. Under Jerry, the sales jumped the next year to 980, when it became the Jerry Brown Chevrolet. Since then, the dealership has sold 63,000 cars, averaging 2,400 cars and trucks a year, according to his son. Today, Jerry Brown Chevrolet covers a 15-acre lot and employs 80 people.
"It's one of the biggest dealerships in the Atlanta area," according to Walter Jackson of Ringgold, Ga., a friend of Jerry's who owns two automobile dealerships. "At one time, it was the biggest retailer in the Atlanta zone," he added.
During his years with Chevrolet, Jerry won many sales campaigns for being a leading dealer. He traveled on chartered planes with other dealers and won trips to Austria, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hawaii, Italy, Monte Carlo and New Zealand. "He didn't fish. He didn't hunt. He didn't golf. The one hobby he had was the automobile business," his son said. His son Gary took over the business in February.

ROGER BROWN
Famed Artist Dies in Atlanta
ATLANTA, Ga.-- Roger Brown, a prominent painter of the "Chicago Imagist" style, died here at Piedmont Hospital 22 Nov., aged 55.
Roger was born in Hamilton, Al. and grew up in Opelika, Al., the son of James and Elizabeth Brown. He grew up expecting to become a preacher. After he graduated from Opelika High School, he attended bible school at David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tn. However, a life-drawing class at the University of Nashville caused him to become involved in art.
He moved to Chicago in 1962 where he studied first at the Art Institute, then at the American Academy of Design and then back at the Art Institute where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1968 and a master's degree in 1970.
During the late 1960's and early 1970's, Roger became one of a number of artists whoses interests and talents combined into one of the creative styles which defined postwar Chicago art.
"The world that appears in Roger Brown's paintings is strangely familiar, or maybe it's familiar but strange," wrote Atlanta Journal-Constitution visual arts critic Catherine Fox in 1984. It is a world easily recognized yet abstract and orderly in a way the world never is."
The High Museum of Art in Atlanta owns two of Roger's paintings. "Dawn", painted in 1980 is a large oil on canvas work which is an image of a farm enveloped by a mushroom cloud. It is on view in the Nature section of the permanent collection. Another painting "Ohio Snake Mound Tour with Burial Sites" owned by the museum is not currently on exhibit.
"His influence was considerable," said High Museum director Ned Rifkin, adding "The sacred and profane was always his axis, whether it was nature and nuclear threat; usually a critique of we humans as curious creatures."
"I knew Roger personally. I've known and loved his work, purchased his work," Rifkin said. The key thing about the Chicago imagists were the fact they were influenced by folk art and combined that into their work, Rifkin noted and since Roger was from the Southeast, he had a real good sense of that.
Yet Roger didn't like being classified as part of a group. "I feel loosely a part of the Chicago School (of art). Our attitudes were formed at the same time but we all went on to express ourselves in different ways", he said in the 1984 newspaper inter- view which covered his exhibit at the Nexus Galleries in Atlanta at the time. "The whole feeling of my work and what it is about comes right out of being a Southerner. People telling stories about living in the hills of northern Alabama," Roger said. "It made me interested in being a narrative painter. Total abstraction was never enough."
Roger maintained homes in Chicago, New Buffalo, Mich. and Carpenteria, Calif. Last spring, the Art Institute announced that Roger had given his homes and studios in Chicago and Michigan, along with his entire painting collection, to the Institute. The donation also included 30 of his own paintings, some of which the school will sell to establish a scholarship in Roger's name.
The body was cremated. A memorial service was held in Opelika.
Survivors include his parents, James and Elizabeth Brown; a brother, Greg Brown, all of Opelika.
