Welcome to the Hill Family Association's History section on famous and prominent Hills. This part of our History section is devoted to honoring those relatives who have served in the state and provincial legislatures.

The family club would appreciate your help in this effort to gather and preserve information and records on our Hill families. If you know of any relative (Hills or descendants of the family) who have achieved recognition for their accomplishments in any field of endeavor, please let us know with as much details as you can. Try to include any family history of the person.

State Legislatures

Albert A. Hill was elected to the California State Assembly from the 56h District and served 1859-1860.

Arthur G. Hill was born 1841 in Massachusetts. He was elected Mayor of Northampton, Ma. He was elected to the Massachusetts State House of Representatives in 1890. He died in 1926 and is buried at Florence, Ma.

B. A. Hill was elected to the Dakota Territory House of Representatives and served 1863-1864.

Brad Hill, Republican, was elected in 1999 to the Massachusetts House of Representatives and is currently serving in the post, representing the towns of Boxford, Hamilton, Ipswich, Manchester-by-the-Sea and Wenham, and precinct two of the town of Georgetown, all in the county of Essex. He is a graduate of the Northeast Broadcast School. He serves on the Banks and Banking, Science & Technology and Public Safety committees of the House.

Brent Hill of Rexburg, Id., was appointed by the governor in 2001 to fill a vacancy in the Idaho Senate. Brent is president of Rudd & Co., a certified public accounting firm with offices in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. At the time of his appointment, he was chairman of the Madison Couty Coordinating committee, chairman of the board of the Family Crisis Center, chairman of Utah State University School of Accountancy Advisory Board, member of the Utah State Business Dean's Advisory Council and the Brigham Young Univ.-Idaho Investment Committee. He is a graduate of Ricks College and Utah State Univ.

He is currently representing District 27 in the Senate. Brent and his wife Julie have four sons and four grandchildren.

C. R. Hill Jr., Republican of Fayette County, West Virginia, was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1966.

Charles Hill of Goodhue Co., Minn. was elected from the 9th District to the Minnesota State Senate and served 1870-1871.

David Hill was born in 11 Mar 1757 in Fairfield, Ct., a son of Ezekiel Hill and Elizabeth Morehouse. He was elected to the Connecticut State Senate and served 1819-1826.

David S. Hill, Jr. of Glen Cove, NY was elected from Nassau County to the New York State Assembly and served 1945-1951.

Dennie Lee Hill was born 1925 in Boone County, WV. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He was elected to the West Virginia State House of Delegates and served 1959-1967.

Edward Hill III served in the Colony of Virginia's House of Burgesses. He was a son of Edward Hill Jr. and Mary Aston.

Eliphalet Hill Sr. was born abt 1648 in Massachusetts Colony, a son of William Hill Jr. and Elizabeth Jones. He later settled in Connecticut. He served as a Deputy from Fairfield to the Connecticut Legislature from 1691-1694.

Eugene M. Hill was elected in 1970 as a Democrat from the 34th Dist. to the Iowa State Senate.

George Hill of Boone County, WV was elected in 1895 to the West Virginia State House of Delegates.

George E. Hill, Republican from South Portland, Me., was elected Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, serving 1937-1938.

George H. Hill served as a delegate to the Illinois State Constitutional Convention in 1847.

Henry W. Hill served as a delegate from the 31st Dist. to the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1894.

Herbert W. Hill, a Democrat, served as a delegate from Hanover, NH to the 1948 New Hampshire State Constitutional Convention. He was also a delegate to the Democratic Party National Convention that year and a candidate for NH governor.

Isaac Lafayette Hill was born 1 Feb 1814 in Jasper County, Ga., a son of John J. Hill and Sarah Elizabth Parham. He moved to the Mexican province of Texas in 1834 with his uncle Asa Hill. He taught school in Cole and when the Texas Revolution began, he joined the Texas Volunteers. He later was in command of a force at San Felipe in 1836 and fought at the Battle of San Jacinto. In 1845, Isaac settled in Fayette County where he became a prosperous planter. He was elected to the Texas State Senate in the 5th and 6th Legislatures, serving 1853-1857.

He served in the Confederate States Army during the War for Southern Independence. During the 1870's, he was a promoter and stockholder of the Central Railroad.

Isaac was married three times and had nine children. He died at his home near Round Top 18 Jul 1889 and was buried there.

Jack Hill was born in 1944 in Reidsville Ga. He graduated from Georgia Southern University and became the owner of an independent grocery. He served for 33 years in the Georgia Air National Guard as a unit commander and as State Inspector General. He currently is serving in the US Air Force Reserves as a Reserve Forces Officer assigned to the Selective Service System.

Jim was elected to the Georgia State Senate from the 4th District in 1990 and is currently serving in the office. He is a Democrat. He is Chairman of the Senate Higher Education Committee; Vice Chairman of the Ethics Committee; and serves on the Appropriations, Reapportionment, Rules and Transportation Committees; he is also an Ex Officio member of the Agriculture, Corrections, Education, Finance & Public Utilities and Defense, Science & Technology Committees.

He and his wife Ruth Ann live in Reidsville, Ga. He owns a grocery store.

Jim Hill, Democrat, a rancher from Nashville, Ar., was elected to the Arkansas State House of Representatives in 1993 and 1995. He was elected to the Arkansas State Senate in 1997, 1999 and 2001. He is currently Chairman of the ALC Game and Fish Committee and the Revenue & Tax Committee. He also serves on the Agriculture, Forestry & Economic Development; Rural Fire Departments Study Committee; Joint Energy; Joint Budget; and several other committees.

James Burdine Hill was born 27 Mar 1850 in Ga., a son of James Hill and Elizabeth Preston. He was a grandson of Reuben Hill of York Dist., SC. James was elected as a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives and served 1890-1891. He was killed 3 Dec 1917 when struck by a train in downtown Atlanta. He was buried in historic Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.

James Ewing Hill, Sr. was born 4 Nov 1837 in Davidson County, Tn., a son of James Johnson Hill and Elizabeth Lamb Rogers. The family moved to Swartwout, Tx. He taught school briefly and then published the Rising Sun newspaper from 1858-1860. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Confederate States Army during the War for Southern Independence. After the war, he returned to Polk Co. After losing most of his property, he studied law and was admitted to the bar. By 1881, he owned more than 1,000 acres of land in Polk Co.

James was elected as a Democrat to the House of Representatives of the 17th and 18th Texas Legislature. During his tenure, he served as Chairman of the Committee on Jurisprudence and Law Reform. He later presided as a special District Judge and contributed to legal journals and reviews. James married Frances Eugenia Dunman 20 Dec 1859. They had six children.

Joel G. Hill of Wayne County, Pa. was elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate and served 1903-1906.

John Hill was born in NC in 9 Apr 1797, a son of Robert Hill and Martha Halbert (both originally from Virginia). He was elected as a Democrat from the 9th Dist. to the North Carolina State House of Representatives and serve 1839-1841. He died 24 Apr 1861 in Stokes County, NC. John married Julia Crawford. He is buried at the Hill Family Cemetery near Germanton, NC.

Kerry Hill of Temple Hills, Md. was elected in 1998 as a Democrat from District 26 to the Maryland State House of Delegates.

Larry Hill was elected to the Kansas State Senate and served as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labor in 1991.

Leslie C. Hill of Conway, NH served as a delegate to the New Hampshire State Constitutional Convention of 1948.

Louis G. Hill was born 1924 in Palm Beach, Florida. He served in the US Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War. He became an attorney and was elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate in 1966.

R. D. Hill was elected from the 20th Dist. to the California State Assembly and served 1858-1859.

Raymon J. Hill was elected from the 3rd Dist. to the California State Assembly and served from 1863-1867.

Richard Hill Sr. was born Jun 1763 in what is today part of Greene Co., NC, a son of Robert Hill and Martha ("Patsy") Murphrey. He was a farmer and served in the North Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. He served two terms in the NC General Assembly. He was married to Esther Aldridge. Richard died in 1833.

Samuel Hill was elected from the 18th Dist. to the California State Assembly and served 1861-1862.

Theodore Hill Jr. of Jefferson Valley, NY was elected from the Weschester County 6th Dist. to the New York State Assembly and served 1938-1960.

Thomas C. Hill of Laconia, Belknap County, NH, served as a delegate to the New Hampshire State Constitutional Convention of 1948.

Thomas Elihu Hill was born 19 Apr 1829 in Nashville, Tennessee, a son of William Green Hill and Mary Catherine Hall. The family moved to Texas from Tennessee. Thomas was elected to the Texas House of Representatives and served 1862-1863, during the Was for Southern Independence.

William Hill Jr. was born abt 1623 in England, a son of William Hill Sr. and Sarah Jourdain and became one of the earliest settlers of Connecticut. He was appointed to serve as a Deputy for Fairfield to the Connecticut Legislature Sep 1651-Oct 1655; again from Oct 1658-Oct 1659; Oct 1661; and May 1671. William also seerved as Clerk of Fairfield County Court and as the Town Recorder. He served on the War Committee in May, 1653. William married Elizabeth Jones and they had at least five children.

William H. Hill of Nevada County, was elected from the 16th Dist. to the California State Assembly and served 1858-1859. He was elected again, from the 21st Dist. and served 1873-1875.

William H. ("Doc") Hill of Hilo, Ha. was elected as a Republican to the Hawaii Territorial Senate and served 1928-1959. He was elected to the Hawaii State Senate and served 1959-1967. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1944.
