Rock Island County

Confederate Cemetery

Location: Arsenal Island (formerly Rock Island). During the War for Southern Independence, more than 12,000 soldiers of the Confederate States Army and Southern civilians were held as prisoners of war on Rock Island. Thousands died from hunger, maltreatment and disease. They were buried in mass graves on the POW camp site. The cemetery containing the Confederate dead is NOT part of the National Cemetery but is located on the eastern end of the island. Dates are date of burial, usually the same day they died.
