State Government

Sanders - Saunders and descendants who have served in State government offices

State Elected Offices

George Saunders served as Secretary of State of Colorado from 1937 to 1941.

John R. Saunders was born 19 Dec 1869 in King and Queen County, Va. He was elected to the Virginia State Senate and served from 1908 to 1918. He then was elected Secretary of State of Virginia. He was a member of the Eagles, Elks Club, Knights of Pythias and Odd Fellows fraternal orders. He was a Baptist.

Joseph M. Sanders was born 26 Aug 1866 in Wythe County, Va. and lived in that area which became West Virginia. He served as a Judge of the Circuit Court from 1896 to 1904 and was then elected to the Supreme Court of West Virginia and served from 1905 to 1907. He died 17 Feb 1927.

Phil Saunders was elected Attorney General of South Dakota and served from 1955 to 1959.

W. C. Sanders was elected State Treasurer of Colorado and served from 1881 to 1882.

Delegates to State Conventions

Harry D. Sanders was born 27 Sep 1874 in Stafford, Genesee Co., NY. He served as a delegate to the New York state Constitutional Convention from the 50th District in 1915. Harry was an attorney and a member of the American Bar Association. He was an Episcopalian.

Peter Saunders Sr. was born 1823 in Franklin Co., Va., a son of Fleming Saunders Sr. and Alice Watts. Peter served as a delegate to the Virginia State Convention which voted for the Commonwealth of Virginia to secede from the United States of America. The state later joined the Confederate States of America after this convention. Peter was married to Elizabeth Dabney.

City and County Officials

John W. Baker was born 30 Nov 1850 in Lexington, Ky., a son of Amanda Saunders and John Holland Baker. He graduated from Waco University (now Baylor Univ.) and the Jesuit College of St. Louis (later St. Louis Univ.). He read law and became an attorney in Waco, Tx. He was named County Clerk of McLennan County in 1876 and held that office until 1892. He was County Treasurer in 1893-1894 and then served as Sheriff of McLennan County for ten years. He became a County Judge in 1904-1908. He resumed the office of County Clerk in 1912 and held that post until his death 23 Nov 1931.

John married Louise Brown in 1875 and they had five children.
