Randy Sanders was born 22 Sep 1965 at Morristown, Tenn. He graduated from Morristown East High School and then played football as the a quarterback for the University of Tennessee 1984-1988. He lettered for a fourth time in 1988 and upon graduation, he went to work in coaching with the Vols in 1989 as volunteer coach working with quarterbacks under Jim Hofher in 1989 and Cutcliffe in 1990.
He is currently Assistant Football Coach at Tennessee. Randy heads into his third season in 2002 as Tennessee's offensive coordinator looking toward the reachable goal of striking a healthy balance between running and passing.
First priority for the longtime Vol assistant will be to revamp a rushing game that lost the school's all-time leading ground-gainer, Travis Henry. That's no easy task, but an impressive list of candidates has taken aim at filling the tailback vacancy. Sanders hopes the maturing of sophomore quarterback Casey Clausen will lead to an explosive and resourceful passing attack. In addition to coordinating Head Coach Phillip Fulmer's offense, Sanders has the responsibility of working directly with the quarterbacks. Randy was named offensive coordinator after the 1998 season when David Cutcliffe resigned to accept the head coaching job at Ole Miss. Fulmer subsequently changed Sanders' position assignment from running backs to quarterbacks.
He has held a variety of jobs on the Tennessee staff, including a couple of years as a graduate assistant before moving into a full-time position. He also served as Fulmer's recruiting coordinator for five seasons starting in 1994. He oversaw an operation in which Tennessee placed high according to national rating systems each year. His assignment with running backs starting in 1993 followed two seasons in which he worked as wide receivers coach.
Randy was named as a full-time assistant in 1991. Vol coaches had already observed him enough to set high expectations for his development. They had coached him over a five-year period, including a redshirt season, and then watched his work for two more years as a volunteer coach on the Vol staff.
Randy came to Tennessee in 1984 from nearby Morristown as one of the most heralded quarterbacks produced in the state, having nabbed both All-State and All-Southern honors. Randy worked hard in the classroom--four times winning Southeastern Conference Academic All-Star honors--and earned his degree in 1987 at a time when he still had a year of eligibility. After electing to pass up his final season of play, he was persuaded by the coaching staff to give it one more shot in order to give the Vols some needed depth. Randy is married to Cathy Hardison Sanders and they have two children: Kelly (25 Oct 1993), Kari (26 Feb 1996)
Russ Saunders was a blocking back on the University of Southern California's first national champion football team in 1928. As tailback, he led the 1929 Trojans team to a 10-2 record. He was named "Player of the Game" in the 1930 Rose Bowl game, passing for 297 yards and 3 TDs and running for another as USC upset the University of Pittsburg, 17-14. He played one year of pro football, then became an executive with Warner Bros. Studios in Hollywood. He was inducted into the San Diego Hall of Champions in 1960, Football.
