ENOCH MONROE TURNAGE
Veteran of World War II; NC Lawman

SANFORD, NC--Enoch Monroe Turnage died 28 June, 1997 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. He was 72.
Enoch was born 10 Sep., 1924 in Rockingham, NC, son of Winford Jack Turnage and Naomi Bullard.
He was the grandson of Henry Turnage and Josephine W. ("Josey") Purvis; great grandson of Robert Bennett Turnage and Christian Freeman; g. g. grandson of John M. Turnage and his first wife, Nancy McKay; ggg grandson of William Turnage Sr. and Mary.

Enoch married Cinda O'Quinn in 1948. They had two daughters.
He entered the US Navy during World War II and also served during the Korean War; he remained in the Navy until his retirement in 1962. He worked for one year with the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation. He entered college in 1975 and graduated in 1980 with honors, earning a degree in law enforcement and corrections. He worked for several years with the Lee County Sheriff's Department and also served as a training officer and advisor.

Enoch also served on the Lieutenant Governor's Cabinet and Advisory Committee. He also served on the Eckerd Wilderness Educational Systems for Exceptional Children in NC and on its Board of Directors.

He was a member of the Turnage Family Association, the NC Law Enforcement Association, National Sheriff's Association, National Juvenile Association, the American Legion, Sanford Optimist Club.
Burial with full military honors was in Buffalo Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Cinda; daughters Theresa Turnage Harrington, Broadway and Cynthia Turnage Wicker, Sanford; sisters, Marie Turnage Hodges, Zearlee ("Sudie") Turnage Howell and Josephine Brigman, all of Hamlet, NC; and five grandchildren.

CLAUDIUS ("Tom") TURNAGE

WILSON, NC--Claudius ("Tom") Turnage died here 24 July, 1997 at age 78.
Tom was born 21 July, 1919 in Greene County, NC, son of William Turnage and Mamie Ethel Grimsley. He was the third child of at least 14 children.

He was married to Mildred Lee Roper and they had at least two children, Linda Carroll and James Claudius.
Burial was in Wilson. No further details available.

Mrs. HAZEL BRANTON

CLINTON, Miss.-- Our sympathies to Iris Branton Turnage upon the death of her mother, Mrs.Hazel Branton of Clinton. Iris is the wife of Tellie Turnage.

ATHER AVA TURNAGE WHITE
Dies In Foxworth, Miss.

FOXWORTH, Miss.-- Ather Ava Turnage White died at her home here 6 Apr., 1998 aged 80.

Ather was born 21 Oct., 1917 in Marion County, daughter of Emmett Forest Turnage and Effie M. O'Quinn. She was married to Thomas J. White. Ather was a retired factory worker. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas who died in 1963, a sister, Marie and brother, Harold.

Burial was in Turnage Chapel Cemetery.

Surviving are sons Tommy White and Larry White, both of Foxworth; sisters, Ouida Turnage Stringer and Bertha Turnage Pounds, both of Foxworth; 3 grandchildren.

COOPER RAY TURNAGE
Retired Shipyard Worker

FOXWORTH, Miss.-- Cooper Ray Turnage died at a Picayune nursing home 7 Dec., aged 79. Cooper was born 23 Mar., 1918 in Marion County, Miss., son of Alpha Augusta Turnage and Georgia Davis. He was a retired shipyard worker at the shipyards in Gulfport. He was a Methodist. He was married to Alora McMichael 24 Oct., 1944. She is the daughter of Rufus P. McMichael and Mary E. Turnage. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Frances Turnage Hudson, a sister, Eloise Turnage Jones and a grandson, Randy Hudson.

Cooper was the grandson on his father's side of William E. Turnage and Ledocia Williamson; great grandson of Robert D. Turnage and and Martha E. Piggott; gg grandson of Jesse Turnage and Marthe E. Shathford; ggg grandson of William Turnage Jr. and Elizabeth. On Cooper's mother's (Georgia Davis) side, he was the grandson of Martha Gabriella ("Gabe") Turnage and Arnold Winston Davis; great grandson of Robert Daniel Turnage and Martha Ellen Piggott.

Burial was in the Foxworth Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife Alora of Foxworth; daughtere, Sylvia B. Turnage Rankin, Atlanta; sons Kenneth Ray Turnage, Foxworth, Harvey D. Turnage, Kansas City, Ks., Walter E. Turnage, Columbia and Alton A. Turnage, Gulfport; sister, Daisy Lee Turnage Baughman, Foxworth; brothers Archie Turnage, Robert Daniel Turnage and W. Winston Turnage, all of Foxworth; 17 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren.

THOMAS WAYNE TURNAGE
Noted Scientist

AMES, Iowa-- Thomas Wayne ("Tommy") Turnage died here 8 May, aged 64.

Tommy was born 1 Sept., 1933 in Covington, Tenn., son of James Lee Turnage Sr. and Rosetta Ritter. He had been on the teaching staff at the University of Iowa for several years.

Burial details are unknown.

Survivors include his wife, Janet James Turnage; daughter Jacqueline Turnage; son Thomas J. Turnage; other survivors info not available.

BILL AUBRY TURNAGE
Auto Body Repairman

FOXWORTH, Miss.-- Bill Aubry Turnage died 30 May, 1998, aged 28.

Bill was born 6 Oct., 1969 in Perriton, Tx., son of Johnny Turnage and Augusteen J. Turnage. Our Historian has no information on who his grandparents were. Bill was an auto body repairman and lived in Foxworth near Columbia. He attended Turnage Chapel Methodist Church.

Burial was in the Turnage Chapel Cemetery.

Survivors include his parents, Johnny and Geraldine Turnage and Augusteen and Kenneth Payne; brothers John Brian Turnage, Brandon, Ms. Johnny G. Turnage, Foxworth, Kenneth Payne, Northport, Al., William R. Stogner, Gerald R. Stogner and Robert H. Stogner, all of Foxworth; sisters Jeanna Martin, Columbia, Deanna Borders and Rhonda Ardis, all of Foxworth.

JEANETTE MILLS McALLISTER
Daughter of Lena Turnage

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla.--Jeanette Mills McAllister died here 11 Oct., 1997 at New Port Richey Hospital, aged 59.
Jeanette was born 7 Nov., 1938 in Bainbridge, Ga., daughter of Lena Turnage and Archie Taylor Mills Jr.
She was the granddaughter of Gordon Turnage and Mamie Johnson; great granddaughter of William Edward Turnage and Charlotte Anne Crowson; great great granddaughter of Kinchen Turnage and Matilda Rasbury; g.g.g. granddaughter of Jesse Turnage and Frances; g.g.g.g. granddaugher of William Turnage Jr. and Elizabeth.


Jeanette entered Fowltown Elementary School in rural Decatur County, Ga. at the age of four. She lived next door to the school and wanted to be with her neighbor friends so she simply walked in and joined them. The teacher thought she would get tired of it before the end of the day so she let Jeanette stay. The next day, Jeanette showed up again. This time, the teacher tried to send her home. "I put up such a fuss and cried so loud, they let me stay," Jeanette said. She went on to become a star student and graduated as valedictorian from Climax High School at the age of 16. She later graduated from Berry College in Rome, Ga. with a degree in accounting.
Jeanette later lived in Atlanta, where she became a teacher at Greenleaf College and other Atlanta business schools for many years.


She moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where she met Michael K. ("Mike") McAllister. They were married in Rome in 1963. They later moved to Atlanta, where Mike graduated from Atlanta School of Art. The couple adopted a daughter, Sangela Dominique, in 1967. They later had three daughters of their own.


The couple moved to Greenville, SC in 1973 and in 1980, to Upper Darby, a suburb of Philadelphia, Pa. where she lived until they separated about three years ago. Jeanette moved to New Port Richey five years ago. She suffered from osteoporosis, a debilitating disease primarily among women in which the bones are deprived of calcium and steadily become weaker. She had fallen several years ago, breaking her leg. She fell again, breaking her hip and had hip replacement.
Burial was at Beulah Thomas Baptist Church Cemetery near Bainbridge, Ga., beside her parents.


Survivors include daughters Sangela Dominique McAllister, West Chester, Pa., Dr. Natasha Camille McAllister Shultz, Mobile, Al., Anouk McAllister Lindley, Exton, Pa. and Felicia McAllister, Havertown, Pa.; sister, Faye Mills Harwell, Calhoun, Ga.; aunt, Eunice Turnage Wilcox, Quincy, Fl.; and many other relatives. Among her first cousins is our president and Turnage family historian, Robert Earl Woodham.

ERNEST V. TURNAGE
SC Sawmill Worker

McCORMICK, SC-- Ernest V. Turnage died 15 Mar., 1998 aged 49.

Ernest was born in McCormick County, the son of James Ralph Turnage and Marie Smith. He was a retired sawmill worker.
Burial was in Troy Cemetery at Troy.

Survivors include his mother; sister, Rose Turnage Smith, Anderson; and brother James, McCormick.

WILLIAM DENNIS CRAIN
Husband of Estelle Crain

COLUMBIA, Miss.-- William Dennis Crain died at the Wesley Medical Center in Hattiesburg, aged 82, following a long illness.

Dennis was born 5 Oct., 1915 in Washington Parish, La., son of Jessie Dennis Crain and Georgia Tynes. He married Estelle Turnage 22 Dec., 1934. They had three children. Their son, Jesse Devon Crain, preceded Dennis in death. Dennis was a retired state employee. He was a Mason and Shriner and member for more than 50 years of the Tylertown Masonic Lodge 392. He was also a member of the Bessie Puckett Chapter of the Eastern Star. He had served as a deacon of Shiloh Baptist Church for many years.

Burial was in the Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Estelle; daughter Rita Jean (Jean) Pendarvis; son William Hoyte (Hoyte) Crain; sisters Leadette Thomas, Louella McCain and Lillian Thomas, all of Tylertown; brother Homer Crain, Tylertown; grandchildren, Julie Pendarvis Gates, Dana Joyce Crain and Lori Estelle Crain, all of Columbia; one great grandson, Shelby Daniel Gates.

His wife Estelle was a Founding Member of the Turnage Family Association. She is the daughter of Preston Buckley Turnage Sr. and Rosa Statham; granddaughter of Richard Hoyte Turnage and Emma Buckley; great granddaughter of Roland R. Turnage and Elizabeth C. Rowley; gg granddaughter of Jesse Turnage and Martha Shathford (both of Duplin Co., NC).

OLIE McCAIN
Marion County Logger

FOXWORTH, Miss.--Olie McCain died 19 Dec. at a Hattiesburg, Miss. hospital, aged 78.

Olie was born in Marion County, son of Robert ("Rob") McCain and Eva Carter. He was a logger and member of Turnage Chapel Congregational Methodist Church.

Burial was in Turnage Chapel Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mae Irene Stringer Turnage; daughters Rachel Cartier, Sybil Stogner, Eva Hedgepeth, Hollie Jean Bedwell, Vondail McKenzie and Sandra Key Menard, all of Foxworth and Glenda Rose Hamilton, Thomas, La.; son Clyde McCain, Foxworth; sister, Bobbie Jean McCain Turnage, Foxworth; brother, Pete McCain, Foxworth; 29 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren.

Olie was a grandson of Lisa Annie Elizabeth ("Lozannie") Turnage and Nicholas McCain; he was a great grandson of Robert Daniel Turnage and Martha Ellen Piggott; gg grandson of Jesse Turnage and Martha E. Shathford; ggg grandson of William Turnage Jr. and Elizabeth.
