Rockport July 5th 1871.
warm to day

From your aged grandfather (b. July 16. 1787) By the request of A.C. Pool who was with me yesterday, till 7 A.M. this morning; as he is concerned in the furniture busines in Boston No Fulton St. with mr Hill & son, and, is busy, so I write you. Alfred & wife & an adopted daut keep house in Chelsea..Jennie Pool is mr'd to Mr Minton & has gone to Louisville Kentucky, he is connected there with a Rail Road. Mrs. Florend. is living with her son Saml. in Dorchester, who has a wife & two children.

Eben Pool {her son} is in partnership with a young man in a retail grocery; retail store in Roxbury, now Boston. Lillian M. is un married & is now on a visit to Bangor. Judson..Pool's wife died a few months since {in Jany} in Chicago, having been failing in consumption (at last Jany) Some weeks after, he left there for good, for the east, he spent some time with me, & in Bangor & is now in Boston; but has not yet found a buisiness [sic] to suit him. I expect he may visit me soon. Dephina & Jason Giles her husband, occupy a house in Gloucester place boston, he is at work at finishing up sewing machiens [sic] for Grover, Baker, & co, Boston. Hettie is with them

Alfred's buisines {bids} fare to (prove) to yeild a living he has more calls for chamber setts than they can git made. Mr Otis Meriam with whom Alfred has been, his head clerk & out door man; sold out his stock &c. & will visit San francisco soon; where he & a man there keeps a furniture store. in partnership.

I now name Howard F. Pool my youngest son, a tinworker &c. etc. He & a Mr Smith of Rockport tin workers. Bo't out the stock of tin. storves, &c, of a man in Lynn for which they paid $ 18,000 eighteen hundred dollars, or more. & have thus far done well They both have been foreman in Glou. several yrs. & are extra work men, in all parts of there business; some times besides an a prentice, they hire two or more journey men. There character & work, stock & stands No1. Howard is yet unmr'd. says he can't spend time to git a wife yet. But as he did not come home to spend the 4th I mistrust that he took the time for some other purpose He is a Baptist yet & is so respected..his board is extra, with a well furnished chamber, cost $ 7. pr. week now till of late he used to board for $5- at another house

I come now to Rockport

Wm C Pool a bacheldor now over 60 yrs old. He works much of the time winter excepted, in papering rooms, laying down carpets, & varishing [sic] & whitining rooms &etc. he from April 1, 1868 took Sarah Smiths daut. now 9 years old to cloth & I have borded her Solomon Smith her father has provided for Feddy abt 7 yrs old. Sarh my youngest dtr there mother died with the drops at my house Apl 1-as above Mr Smith is yet un mrd Hervey & family live here he is a journey man painter & paperer for the Choates who cary on painting & dealing in stoves, tin ware & other things. He has 3 dau, & one son 3 yrs old Farley & wife yet live in my house. he carries on the land &c. had his oldest son die last year having had two children die before & is childless. Stephen N. Tarr {junr} & Ellen Agusta live in my house the have an adopted daut 12 yrs. old but no child Mr S N Tarr, & his brother Judson & Geo Bradley in Co. are doing a large business in my store & at Bristol Me capatil abt 25 to 30 thousand dollars in stock & in three schooners & a new steam Boat & small craft, seins &c S.N. Tarr goes to Boston generally 6 times a week= Judson his brother is cheif clerk, & of the firm, they employ many men.. Jerusha Ann, Mrs Henry Smith had there oldest son die last year; have 1 dt. & 1 son

As for myself I shall be 84 yer old if a live the 16th of this mo. I have not for months known what a day was, cleare of pain, burning humor, and debility. I go out often around near by home. & sometimes to meetings. we have a very Godly devoted young minister, & have within a few months past between 20 & 30 added to the church, young men and young women, mostly: have prayer meetings often besides the Sabbath meetings, &s.ss. when we have no minister to open week evening prayer meetings, Wm takes the charge--our pray meetings are well attended, since you was here $6 500 dollars have been laid out on the Mt house & paid for. write me--from Ebenr Pool_ [In the margin]: Laura Pool Jur. Herveys dtr has kept my house over 2 yrs--
