Update June 4, 2000
- By Corinne Waldheim
Still feeling the aches and pains from the prior day's Beach
Channel Alumni Crew regatta and the following hours spent at
Connelly's, I dragged my aching muscles and bones out of bed
in time to catch the Sunday morning Jamaica Bay Softball action.
Thanks to all the old-timers (that would be my 23-28 year-old
fellow alumni Jaime, Antonio, Virginia, Tony and Maria, and not
some of the guys on the Rockies team) who helped me rediscover
my love for rowing and later joined me for some frozens. I (along
with buddies Kelly, Nicole, Valerie and Jodi) would also like
to congratulate one of my very best friends, Keren McEneaney
on her graduation from Queens College.
In game one of the Mudshark/Rockies
double header the sharks won 10-6.
The brothers McCarthy
were hot today, led by Richie who was 3-6. Chris was 2-3, with
a double and Keith contributed with 2 RBI. Gene Mohr went 2-3.
Completing the sweep, the sharks won the second contest, 9-2.
Mohr added a couple more hits. Bobby Steiner, 5-6 with several
RBI and five runs scored, stood out offensively. Gene G. made
his 2000 debut a memorable one as he went 3-3 with a triple.
Joey Ernst sprayed a few liners around left and center.
The Daggers' Billy "Willie
Mays" Molloy was 2-2, with three runs scored. Dennis went
1-2 with a run scored and sac fly. Jay was 1-1 with two sacrifices.
Dave and James were 2-3. Molloy made an excellent over the shoulder
catch in center field to rob the Mudsharks of extra bases. In
the second game, Billy and Chris were 2-2. Kinzie brushed himself
off and hung in at third after each and every arduous play. Note:
All stats reported are limited to the fifth inning of game two.
In the Grassy Point royal
rumble/steel cage match/Wrestlemania there was no clear victor.
The Assassins and Muggers split two as Kenny the Mouse (I know
I should fear for my life right now) was a no show again. Billy
Johnson tried to walk as many batters as possible but had a few
good hits and Chuckie K'd in his first ever clean-up appearance.
Mike Salica would have made an excellent throw home, if only
Cheeks had caught it. Tommy Brasche also struck out. Bowerman
had a couple of hits and congratulations are in order for Matt
Salica who had a baby boy.
In the grueling match
that was game one, the Assassins persevered, 3-2. "It was
a defensive battle," said Steve Rosino. Sang broke up a
double play on Angel's sacrifice in order to score the winning
run. Danny Jackowski made left field an easy out. In game two
"too many errors and bad attitudes attributed to our loss,"
said one Assassin. The Inwood/Bryan's Auto brain-child had the
lead (8-6) into the fifth but the Muggers battled back and tied
it in the next inning. Even Danny J's home run in the final inning
could not salvage the sweep. Muggers win 13-10.
Excerpts from the Old
Head webpage:
The Black Water Old Head defeated their cross-tap rivals the
Freak Show by a score of 9-5. Cass Boggiano earned his first
victory of the season while going 2-2 and scoring two runs. Highlights
from this game included Colm Nielson, who was 3-3 with two RBI;
Dan Euerle, 2-3 (2 RBI) and Casserly with solid defense and two
RBI at the plate. Steve Gonzalez was perfect at the plate, chipping
in with a triple and a sacrifice fly. Clutch hitting and sound
defense were the keys to the Old Head triumph.
This second game of the
Black Water rivalry was a lot closer than the score (8-3) may
indicate. This game was actually knotted at 2-2 going into the
seventh inning. In the top of the last inning, the Old Head beared-down
and put together a fine rally. Todd Ames notched his second victory
of the season and added two hits and a RBI at the plate. Nielson
was perfect at the plate for the second straight game, coming
through with three hits including an RBI triple scoring Casserly
(2-4, two runs, RBI) to tie the game at two. Casserly again contributed
both with his glove and his bat. Jim Balfe was a perfect 3-3,
and scored the all-important go-ahead run in the top of the seventh
inning. Euerle added another solid game at the plate, going 2-3
with a RBI and two runs scored. This game was won by a solid
team effort, both offensively and defensively.
Back to the Waldheim
report: Over at On the Waterfront, Buckle the Monkey was playing
some tunes as they awaited the arrival of drummer and Freakshow
stalwart Doc. Doc was just returning from Greece with his new
wife. Eighties long-haired rock star lovin' ladies are crying
everywhere, I tell ya. Filthy Phil was once again shooting his
mouth and offering everything including his first born for me
not to quote him, still following direct orders, I didn't. Mike
Coogan was out of town and unavailable for comment. Entertainment
at On the Waterfront this Friday will include Blue Monday, so
check it out!
