In 1887 John B. Ford negotiated and then bought property called Appleby Manor and in the following year laid out construction of a plate glass factory that would eventually become the largest in the world.

The town is named after this founder whose vision created employment and a way of life for thousands of European immigrants. After over one hundred years of production the factory did shut down. Ford City still remains a strong community searching for its new role in the future.

Ford City High School has had a long tradition of sending graduates into the world ready to take up the challenges of a craft or an academic discipline. Many an immigrant's son or daughter has used education as a stepping stone.

The school in Ford City is part of Armstrong School District.
