We have heard all the excuses, all the rumors etc, about 24-pin chips, 6-pin and 4-pin.  What we decided to do was to make sure that the rumors and the fact were separated.

First:  There is NO DC Modchip that allows you to play CDR Backups of DreamCast GDROMS.  PERIOD.  The chip we are reviewing here is simply a Regional Modchip that allows you to play games from any region as well as use territorial equipment such as light guns etc.

When our friends at www.dreamchip.com (a.k.a. www.modchips.com) released their exclusive pre-wired 4-wire Dreamcast modchip we were very excited.  We had done the “cut the battery” and the 24-pin method and it worked fine, but was a real pain in the rear to install.

The 4-wire chip installed much easier than we had anticipated.  There was no need to make any “permanent” modifications to the DC.  We can insert and remove the chip at any time we need to without leaving a trace of the chip ever being in place.

We were able to boot PAL games on an NTSC system in full color.  It worked perfect, just as described.  Unfortunately we did not have a PAL model to try it on, but we can say with assurance that it will work on PAL models as well.

At only a few $ for a single chip with bulk discounts available, you can bet that if you have a Dreamcast and plan to stick with it for a while that this is going to be a necessary add-on.

Visit www.dreamchip.com to order one of these little beauties and you will be quite satisfied to find that good service, great technical support, easy installation and a product that works as advertised make the entire experience as headache free as it can possibly be.

Good luck!
