The Movie Review

Almost every news show has an entertainment segment.That’s the part of the news during which a reviewer talks about a current movie, play, art show, or concert. Movie fans especially enjoy tuning in for the movie review. They want to know what the reviewer thought of the latest movie before they line up to see it.

Here’s your chance to tell everyone your opinion about a current movie. Will you give it a thumbs up or a thumbs down?

Assignment

You will write a two to five minute movie review and present it to the class.

Getting Started

Begin by thinking of reasons for liking a movie. “It was exciting.” “It seemed so real.” “My favorite actress was in the movie.” You get the idea. List four reasons why you might like a movie.

Writing The Movie Review

Now it’s your turn to write your own movie review. Choose a movie you have seen recently, either on video or at the theater. Try to make your review about two to five minutes long. Use a separate sheet of paper.

Here’s what you’ll want to include in your review.

The Introduction

Introduce yourself and the movie you are reviewing:

My name is Ben Dover, and tonight I’m going to review the latest horror picture, Bambi meets Godzilla.

The Body

Summarize the movie plot but don’t give away the ending:

This movie is about that lovable deer Bambi and his fight to protect all the small animals of the forest from the evil Godzilla. Bambi.....

The Conclusion

Finish your review by telling the audience what you liked or disliked about the movie. Rate the movie:

The special effects in this movie were the best I’ve ever seen. I was gripping the arm of my chair for almost two hours. I give this movie four stars, my highest rating.

Preparation

1. Copy your movie review onto note cards - it will be easier to read.

2.Practice reading your review aloud and have someone time you. If your review is too long try to cut out unnecessary information. If it is too short see if there are some areas you forgot to mention.

3. Work on eye contact. Remember, if you’re not looking at the audience, they’ll probably stop listening.

4. Your voice should be loud enough to be heard in the far corner of the classroom.

Presentation

1.Dress nicely. Appearance really helps.

2. Stand up straight. Don’t lean against a wall or chalkboard. Keep your hands out of your pockets.

3.Look at your audience.
