Transcript of the last DeMarini Chat
Dan K. |
Ray, I was wondering what changes will be made to your line of bats for 1997. |
Tony |
Ray, I'm in South Florida, I've caught your show several times and was hooked but can't find it on TV anymore. T |
Glenn |
It was mentioned on the mailing list that Demarini will be making double wall bats for other companies. Can you provide any details on this subject? |
Ken Maleske |
I attended the final day of the World Championships in East Chicago, In. and I noticed that no-one from DeMarini was represented. Ray, I figured with all the publicity of the Double wall you would have a team there. |
ray demarini |
Tony: The show is over for 1996. We have an expanded schedule in 1997. We'll have 13 new shows with some big time sponsor possibilities to allow us to do a GREAT show. Stay tuned for times starting in early (feb) 1997. thanks, ray. |
Michael J. Brennan |
What can I do as a slow-pitch pitcher agianst batters who have seen your videos and use your advice? |
Robin Chavez |
Ray, we played in an ASA tournament, but the park owner said we could not use the UD bat because their insurance did not cover injuries caused by the bat. My question is, does the park owner override ASA rules? Or is it Park by Park basis? |
Mark W |
Ray, ARe you going to be at the USSSA B Nationals in Tucson, AZ next week? Our team is co-sponsored by DeMarini and we'd like to see you |
ray demarini |
Dan K: Lots of changes to both the single and double walls. Too many to list here, but suffice to say both are BETTER! You can call my company for a catalog and they'll send you one as soon as they are ready. The bats are AWESOME! They were used by the Japan, Chinese, and Taiwan Olympic womens teams and they hit MISSLES ... so have I. You will be very happy! |
Mark W |

John |
Hi Ray, Why is the double wall so much more expensive than the single wall. I do not see the cost of manufacturing to be any more than the cost a single wall. |

What kind of cost will the double wall bats be from other companys |
SysAd |
Whoa, kids! We got a lot of visitors here today! ray is typing so fast his fingers are smoking, so please be patient and we will do our best to see to it that ALL questions are answered.... |
ray demarini |
Mark W: won't be at Tucson ... testing bats for the 1997 season ... first things first ... good luck! |
Mark W |
Are there any plans in the works to put out an 11 inch double-wall? |
Tommy Spratlin |
Ray, My opinion is that in slow-pitch softball, for all practical purposes, the batter generates all the power and the speed the ball is pitched has little or nothing to with it. What's your opinion? We've got ongoing flamage about this subject on the mail group. |
Robin Chavez |
Ray, Do you sponsor any D or C teams or are you interested in doing so? If so, how would our team go about doing this? |
Crusher |
Ray, why is it that you don't have to swing as hard with the double wall bat. I'm told the bat does all the work. |
ray demarini |
Ken: I have curtailed sponsorship of teams. My money is much better spent in Research and Developement. I want to continue to improve my product ... testing is the way ... you end up with a better bat. I like that! |
David Moore |
I purchased your single wall this year. Nice bat. Everyone on my team was using it. We were beat by a couple of teams with everyone using a double wall and the difference was evident. I'll be saving my money to make sure I get a double wall next year! |
Crusher |
Ray, How can you go about being a distributor for DeMarini bats? |
Danny Fauteux |
Ray, I've been using your Distance bat all summer and love the way it has made me more of a consistent hitter. I don't own one of my own yet, but I'm going to buy one as soon as the 97 Demarini's come out. The only thing that stopped me from buying this year are the rumors that they may be illegal next year. Is there any truth to this? I've noticed that using your bat I don't really hit the ball much farther than I could with a normal bat, if I really tagged it last year, but I seem to hit the long shots way more often. The way the bat works I don't see why it should become illegal, the ball doesn't come off the bat any faster, it's just that you hit the ball hard more often. I live in Canada but I play in the States under the USSSA, and in Canada. When does your new line come out, and any changes planned? |
ray demarini |
Glenn: We made bats for Mizuno Corp strictly for the olympics. We have NO immediate plans to release the technology beyond that. If you want a double wall ... it will be a patent protected DeMARINI. |
ray demarini |
John: the double wall is handmade! It is a very labor intensive process to build the bat. We are trying as hard as we can to imrpove our manufacturing techniques to lower the cost. Bear with us! |
ICE9 |
is bat speed the answer to hit home runs |

Hello Ray. Just to let you know you have a great show. I am looking forward to seeing it again next season. |

How can a person go about being a distributor for DeMarini bats??? I have my own sporting goods business and everybody wants one but I have to send them 50 miles down the road or tell them to order it thru Softball Sales. |
angel |
Ray, are you going to play in Texas in the near future? |
Michael J. Brennan |
What can I do as a slow-pitch pitcher agianst batters who have seen your videos and use your advice? |
Brian Temple |
Ray..what can we expect new for 1997 bats? how about the contour grip..will we see that on your bats. |
ray demarini |
Tommy: GREAT question! I test with both a batting tee and live pitching. I have tested using both methods so many times ... literally thousands. There is NO difference in ball velocity between a 'tee' and live slopitch pitching which means the pitch speed is contributing nothing. FYI: speed of a ptiched ball in slo pitch is between 15 and 21 MPH. |
Crusher |
What is the newsgroup address for DeMarini? Ayone??? |
wendell murray |
Ray why does some people say that your new bats are not as good as your old ones, giving the reason that they are now not hand made. Is this true? |
Brian Temple |
Ray..im from Hurricane hit N.C. our softball team has been using one of your bats..we really liked it...But Hurricane FRAN and the flood ruined it....Can we get an new one ?? at a good price. |
SysAd |
Crusher, if you are referring to the mailing list, it is subscribe softball-l (subject) to majordodmo@teleport.com |
SysAd |
Crusher, if you mean a usenet newsgroup, plans are in the works... |
Michael J. Brennan |
Sorry, did not mean to post the question twice. Another question: How do I get more top-spin on the ball? My hits seems used to go about 10 yards out of the infield, now they go about 30, right in range for the center fielder. |
Mark W |
Ray, We've been told (when swinging the double-wall) to swing easy and let the bat do the work. Easier said than done, but it does work. The ball seems to fly when we don't over swing. Any opinions? |
Danny Fauteux |
Ray, I've been using your Distance bat all summer and love the way it has made me more of a consistent hitter. I don't own one of my own yet, but I'm going to buy one as soon as the 97 Demarini's come out. The only thing that stopped me from buying this year are the rumors that they may be illegal next year. ray demarini |
Crusher: Great question again! In my humble experience, you THINK you are not swinging as hard. In fact you are making a conscience decesion to not swing as hard cause you know the bat 'works'. But what really happens is you are relaxed (confident) and you actually generat more bat speed. There is a great lesson in that statement. Remove the tension from you swing and you will hit the ball Harder!!!! |
Brian Temple |
Ray....does the contour grip add any power? will we see that in your bats for 19978? |
Crusher |
Thanks, SysAd, I was referring to the mailing list. |
Tony Morrone |
When will we see new tips and updated info from your home page. |
SysAd |
No prob, crusher. Hope to see you there! |

Is it possible to send in my bat to be re-furbished? (repainted and new grip) Would the cost justify just buying a new bat? |
SysAd |
TONY: We are working round the clock RIGHT NOW on a Demarini website that will take you into the 21st century, bud. Stay tuned!! |
ray demarini |
Dannny: here is the story on bat legality. The bat is approved for 1997 for USSSA, ISA, NSA and ASA.( there are more). The asa is adopting bat standards as we speak. They will not take effect in 1997 and possibily 98 or 99. In the meantime the double wall is legal. You will run into an occasional local facility that is uninformed about the bat and they will not le t you use it. It would be good to call my company and we can usually get it ironed out quickly and with no problems. The bat will be ok for years to come!! |
SysAd |
Good idea, Michael... |
SysAd |
Hold, folks-- Ray has "gone down the hall..." |
Crusher |
SysAd, do you know anything about becoming a distributor for DeMarini bats? |
Scott Buchanan |
I have been using your bats for 5 years now, I am from Berea Ky and I am good friends with David and Robert Evans |
Dan K. |
Ray, with the movement towards lighter bats, why have none of the major companies come out with 34 inch, 25 ounce bats yet? Do you plan on making any? |
SysAd |
No, but ray will be back at the com.. Oops, here he is! |
Brian Temple |
Ray.. i saw where you recommeded dips for increasing strenght..any other exercises i can do to increase strenght say 20 ft. |
ray demarini |
David: It is not really feasible to redo the anodizing and graphics. New grip is no problem. |
Brian Temple |
Ray...your bats do have a nice sweet spot. We have had guys 30 and up hit there FIRST homeruns with your bat. but again hurricance FRAN destroyed it...Can you make a bat to stand up against flooding. |
Danny Fauteux |

ray demarini |
Angel: NO plans to play...too busy making the bats better for YOU! |
Robert Estes |
How is the sweet spot defined? How much do you lose when you get away from the speet spot, per se. The half inch sweet spot mentioned for "other" bats seems quite small. |
kevin kuhns |
Ray...Are the rumors true, Can I really get an extra 50 feet from the double wall??? |
Brian Temple |
Ray ..whats new for the 1997 bats...What can you do to make them better!! they are already great |

Hey, Danny-- Ray WILL get to your question.. He's just typing as fast as he can.... |
ray demarini |
Wendell: I can assure you that the current double wall is BETTER than any I have had. The first double walls were a quantum leap over any previous bats available. Players received such a jump in performance over what they were used to that in their eyes it was incredible. the differences now are much more subtle. the 96 double walls are 2 BPF points better than previous versions that you speak of. The 1997's are better yet. WE are NEVER happy at DeMARINI. We live to hit and become better and better and better. And we want that for YOU! |

Ray can you become an independent distribitor without owning a retail store. i think i could really sell your bats...because of how much my hitting g improvemnts |
Danny Fauteux |
Sorry, messing around with my browser didn't mean to ask the question so many times. |
ray demarini |
Brian: this is a first!! how does a flood ruin a bat? |
SysAd |
No problem, Danny, just wanted to make sure you weren't getting impatient... |
Brian Temple |
Ray ..stick to making softballs..have a secratary type for you!!! |
ray demarini |
Michael: topspin - you need to hit the top half of the ball using a slight uppercut. However, if you are hitting it to the outfielders, why not just blast it over their asses? |
SysAd |
Brian, do you want the job? |
Brian Temple |
RAY.....we got hammered ,,, BATS and grips especially ruined... i think one of your bats is prob in the bottom of the Atlantic ocean somewhere?? |
Danny Fauteux |
Any plans for changing your bat next year, I've seen other companies advertising C405 plus. Is this an improvement in the metal or just a gimmick? When will your new bats be selling? |
Brian Temple |
SysAD...i would love to work for Demarini sports..Does RAY need a CPA yet..who can hit a softball !!! |
Michael J. Brennan |
Ray, when I hit for for the fence I fall short. Maybe I should try a double-wall bat? |
ray demarini |
Mark W: You made a great statement. the ball seems to fly when you don't overswing. that is totally correct, whether it be my double wall, a louisville, easton or anything else. when i teach hitters, the cornerstone of my teaching and by far the most important thing is to be relaxed without tension! YOu will swing harder. sounds crazy but it is true. |
angel |
Ray, are you going to play in Texas in the near future? |
Brian Temple |
RAy....still wondering what you think about the contour grip on bats..does it help with performance ? what do you think? will we see that as an option on your bats? |
ray demarini |
Brian: contour grip is totally a 'feel' thing for players. some like it, some don't. it is not going to make a significant difference with or without, it is a comfort thing! |
Ron Mc |
Ray What is the difference between the double wall and the single wall? In distance the ball carries and the bpf. |

SysAd, do you know anything about becoming a distributor for DeMarini bats? |

SysAd, Maybe irc should of been used for this chat. Just my opinion. |

i guess Bats arent warranted against hurricanes!! maybe i can win one in the free Giveaway! |
Crusher |
Sorry, SysAd, didn't mean to repost it. I got it from Ray!!! |

IRC allows little or no control from our end. We have also considered using PowWow, but we need to accomodate many simultaneous users. This seems the best option. |
Brian Temple |
Ray..i saw earlier you mentioned doing DIPS to improve hitting strenght. any other exercises you can recommend to incluse in a workout to hit balls out of the park?? |
kevin kuhns |
Ray...What type of strength training will best improve bat speed? How does your double wall compare to something like the TPS Outlaw? I'm getting ready spend some cash on a new bat and I want the best. |
ray demarini |
Dan K: superb question! if light is good, why not go 25oz. I have done tons of experiments with 25's. there are certain players that can make them work. It is tough though. the bat needs to have a super light shell with a heavier end plug, yet weigh 25 oz. they are tough to make and not really suited to the masses. 26oz. on the other hand, can be made readily and they work great for most anyone willing to take the TIME to get used to them! |
Brian Temple |
Kevin spend the extra money for the Demarini..IT makes a difference...See Ray already im plugging your bat.!! |

Brian: dips ARE the king. I love flat benches with DUMBBELLS. You can get greater range of motion than with a bar. remember when you are training: you are a ballplayer NOT a bodybuilder. train for explosive power and quickness. then swing with BAD intentions like MIKE does. |

Ray can you explain to me the importance of bat speed and bat wieght, and is there any kind of ratio that one can use to compare ones size/weight to determine the proper bat? |
Brian Temple |

Guys..just proof the Demarini works... WE had two guys on our team both in their late 30's hit there "FIRST" homeruns with the Demarini bats.....those guys are willing to buy the bat no matter the price.!! |
ray demarini |
Robert: great sweet spot question. Due to their inherent design, ANY single wall bat falls off significantly in performance when you get about an inch out from the actual sweet spot. Yesterday I was testing single wall bats off a 'tee', in the sweet spot my ball velocity was 88 / 89 MPH. We blocked off the sweet spot so that all measured hits were 'away' from the sweet spot. My ball speed droped off to 83 / 84 MPH just ONE inch from the 'spot' . |
Danny Fauteux |

Brian Temple |
Ray ..i noticed your grips are synthetic leather? why not real leather? whats the difference?? |
ray demarini |
Kevin: rumors, oh those crazy rumors! NO. you can however pick up loads of consistency. Here are the facts exactly as they are: Let's say that I have the ability to hit the ball 350ft with a good swing hitting the ball right on the sweet spot with a pitch in my zone. Because the double wall has a much more forgiving sweet spot, I can get that 350' range much more readily with the double wall. It is important to note that I can get the 350' with the single wall ( just as far) but i need to hit the ball in exactly the right spot. and it is a narrow spot believe me!! the double wall gives you consistency, not ball velocity or distance! |
Scott Buchanan |

Danny Fauteux |
I would like to know about becoming a retailer also, with the info. that the bats will be legal for years to come. I could have 5 sold today alone. In Canada the bats are not seen much, most people have never even heard of them, but with the difference it made with my hitting this year I'd be a great poster boy. I own a gym in Canada and have atleast 30 ball players working out in my gym. |

phil levine |
Ray, do you think they need to move the pitcher's mound back again because of the livelier bats and bigger stronger players? |
ray demarini |
Wendell: yes, great question - bat weight ,bat speed ... how does it all work? With todays modern thin wall bats, you are trying to create a 'collision'. you want to cave in the alloy so that it can spring back and work for you. It only stands to reason that heavier bats are not going to create the collsion that a lighter bat would assuming you are of average strength and size. you need to go light! 28 oz bats seem to work for most anyone. it is a good choice for those not sure. the key is bat speed, but MORE IMPORTANTLY BY FAR-maintaining your bat speed as you make contact with the ball. You lose speed (more than you think) as you transfer the energy from the swing to the ball. the key is to maintain as much as possible as you go through the ball. In other words, have a great follow through. that is the difference in power. i did a test with some physics professors a couple of years ago. they said that if two people swang at the same speed just prior to hitting the ball, that it would have the SAME velocity as it left the bat. i told them they should stick to reading books. we did a test with someone with my exact bat speed and my size. We both swang at 94MPH. I hit the ball 15mph faster than he didWHY?? i had 56MPH immediately after the ball left, he was at 46mph. i transferred more energy to the ball. he 'gave up his swing' when he hit the ball. i highly recommend that everyone of you out there never forget this ... this is the essence of attaining your fully capability as a hitter. GO THROUGH THE BALL. ACCLERATE big time!!!! |

Crusher |
Brian, don't be a dickhead!!! I play on 300' fences 4 nights a week and have not had any problems hitting it out of Freedom Florence in Florence, SC which is 320'. Any questions??? |
ray demarini |
brian: we are making the 1997's right now . they will be available through demarini, but also we have expanded our dealer network and they can now be purchased wherever you live. if your retailer doesn't carry them, tell him to get you one. we have made it very easy for retailers to get them. have fun. |
Brian Temple |
Crusher..the 285 at the end of my question was a typing mistake..i couldnt see the end of my sentence? no offense intended? i was curious on what is the largest fence you all play on? |

Ray....with production going up? will price come down? |
SysAd |
C'mon, Johnny, I'm the police here. We want to avoid flame wars here, please. |
ray demarini |
phil; i have not heard people saying that. i personally get way more height with the dw than with the sw. it could be that the bat has a kind of strange center of gravity and it takes awhile to get used to it and in the meantime, guys may be 'looping the bat over the ball' and kind of creating topspin. |

I'm just trying to get anwsers, I can watch soaps on TV |

Ray, have you heard debeer selling a titanium that doesn't say titanium for |
phil levine |
Ray, do you think they need to move the pitcher's mound back again because of the livelier bats and bigger stronger players? |
Dan K. |

Brian Temple |
Ray..one prob we run into in ASA Class A church league is onlt one homerun a game....CAn you do anything about this?? just kidding |
ray demarini |
DAN K: you need 2 bat speed meters to check before and after. they are expensive and hard to get. get one of my chute speed trainers. it was specifically designed to increase your follow through. you will NOT believe how good this thing works. it is a parachute designed to fit on a bat. it is the greatest invention ever conceived for providing you with follow through power . it builds your nerve/muscle fibers but even more importantly, it creates all important muscle memory so that you will go through the ball with all you've got every time you swing a bat. you would not believe how many major league players buy these from my company. they beg me to not tell anybody. they want the edge!! it works bigtime!!! |

Thanks for coming, Dan. Hope to see you here next month... |

Bat questions will have to wait until next month, Oct. 9, 10:am Pacific. |
ray demarini |
john; i don't see anything wrong with a long swing assuming the pitcher isn't getting the ball by you. the longer the swing, the more room to generate speed. the problem is that a long swing also creates lots of room for error. keep a eye on your mechanics. assuming they are good ... don't worry about it |
SysAd |
OK, kids... closing. See ya next time!!! |
Crusher |
Thanks, Ray, for taking time to chat. |
