This guestbook is brand new as of 1/9/99. I decided to create a new guestbook because my previous guestbook service could only handle 250 entries at a time, and I exceeded that number long ago! But I'm sentimental -- I saved all the old guestbook entries to a text file before I made the change so I have a permanent record of all the visitors that have visited!

I just got this telescope (which cost over $300) from my husband because Astronomy has always been an interest of mine, but every site I've read tells me that it's a piece of junk - I guess next time, we'll need to do more research prior to buying. Thank for the great advice on you page for viewing!!

My daughter received a telescope from Santa Claus today. She is in 3rd grade and presently her class is talking about the stars and planets. We set the scope up tonight and pointed it at the brightest star in the heavens. We had a hard time lining it up w th the focus piece. I am not sure we were even looking at a star. I was wondering, what you know about this Telescope. I think for the money, we will not be able to see much. This in advance, Jack.

Nice web site, Ben. About 28 years ago, my grade 7 science teacher (who used to grind his own lenses and home-build reflectors) took us out to photograph the night sky. I've been involved in the photography part ever since, but am just now shopping for a elescope. I'll be back to your site often, I expect. Now if can just talk my neighbour into shutting down his driveway light... Cheers, Mike.

Anyway we'll probably purchase a new scope sometime next month. Thanks for posting all the good info. Rick Hess Niwot, Co.

Very nice site Ben, thanks for all the info. I am just about to the stage of buying our first scope. Boy what a decision. Last night I was able to go look through two custom dobsonian style scopes. One a 15" and the other a 17". For my first ever experie ce it was really nice. At this point I ( for some reason) am still drawn towards the shorttube 80 wa refractors, I guess just because they seem so portable and can be used for other viewing also. They are inexpensive and seem like an ok way to get started, I just dont know what I can really see in they? Have you ever used one? Again Ben this site is awsome, I found it from some guys comment on the newsgroup sci. astro.amatuer. Here is the link to my neighbors telescope site that you might enjoy, this is the 7" I got to see through.http://www.skyvalleyscopes.com/ http://www.skyvalleyscopes.com/images/17.5_and_24.25.JPG Buy the way, Ken said the big scope is for sale. Thanks for your webpage. I'm 35, and just beginning to obsess about the infinite universe we live in. My question: I am looking at a Meade 90mm telescope with Go-To technology. I almost salivate reading the Go-To's database of over 1500 objects in the sky that it will lock onto as well as track, including other galaxies, all 8 major planets, double stars, ect. But will the telescope they're offering allow me to see deep enough into space to see all the objects in the database? The thought of being able to s e some of these things with my own eyes blows me away! Why didn't I get started years ago? Thanks again, Tim Shepard

Anyways we are wondering what we can see, would be nice to hear from you, hope that you can reply, know that you are probably a busy person, yet we hope to hear from you, thanks for your time,we will enjoy your websight, have it bookmarked, KnC

I am writing a novel in which I require scenes of 'learners' tracking minor planets/asteroid belts, NEOs PHAs in a new star system. I can't quite get the hang of reporting what is seen or how many other sightings have to be made to identify said objects. This may sound silly - but, with all the photographs and INTERNAL diagrams, I still can't find in 9 references books how to describe the EXTERIOR of a Cassegrain or a Schmidt - the first is a "skeletal type" on a equatorial mounting and the 2nd is a blunt barrel/cylinder. I've identified the finderscope but what are the other two tubes on its surface. I refer to the UK Schmidt. I've got to describe them properly to readers.

It is tricked out with a 2" focuser, telrad, and University optics 8x 50mm finder. This set up makes a great star party scope. Currently saving pennies for big apature. Found you while surfing for info for a friend with a new (Celestron 4.5" reflector) telescope. Clear skys. p.s. I forget the exact title but "turn left at orion" is a good book f r a smaller telescope. // rb

I am 28, I was very interested in astronomy from age 8-15. After 15 I discovered other heavenly bodies and lost interest in stargazing. For Christmas this year I bought my son a small telescope. He quickly lost interest in it because it didn't blow up, or shoot lazers. So I was left with a telescope and a bored kid. I began to go out alone and have managed to respark my own interest. Now I think I will go get a 8 or 10 inch telescope. I am thankful for the information on your site.

Hello, I've done a lot of surfing for astronomy sites today and happily came across yours. At age 40 I think I'll finally get a scope or at least join a local club. Your General Info is helpful. In "Your Eye Versus The Astrophoto" I learned, as I suspected, that I shouldn't expect to see coloured nebulae and galaxies and such unless photographing them. I had no clue about the subject of the "What Does f/8 Mean?" article. Good thing I read it. I've two links you might add to your own: http://www.heavens-above.com - allows inputting your location and then lists observable objects of all types that will pass overhead. http://space.jpl.nasa.gov/ - has a pretty neat browser based Solar System Simulator. It actually creates pretty real (to my eye) looking images. That's all. Thanks for the help! jelb

Thank you for your excellent site. I found it Appropriate for your target audience. I think it's a great service. A hobby shop owner in my small town clued me in to the importance of aperature over magnification, and I'm sure glad he did--even though I later got a small Tasco telescope, at least I knew not to worry about magnification and had an idea that it might be a pretty limited instrument. P.S. About the Tasco I owned, I either lost it somehow or an ex-roommate stole it. At any rate, it was $80 at Kmart, and exhibited many of the limitations of cheap telescopes which you describe. I have to give it credit though. If I was content to view the moon and the closer planets at the time, it could do it, even if not exceptionally well. Still, I did get a little more enjoyment out of looking at the night sky with 10x50 Bushnell binoculars. Thanks again for your excellent site.

Absolutely incredible. Now, I just purchased my first telescope a 4.5" reflector from Meade and am looking for any information about how, what and when to view. I'm hooked. Thanks for providing some of the basics. I'll probably pick up a couple of the books you recommended. I'll bookmark your site to see if you h ve any new object of the month entries.

Like the site. I have been interested in astronomy for quite a while, primarily using my naked eye. My wife gave me this scope cuse she saw the name meade. It is a .96 mall junk. in order not to make her feel bad, I am trying to use it. I bought a hy rid 1.25/.96 diagonal, an orion 1.25 shorty barlow and a very expensive 12mm "Radium" eyepiece. Maybe I am stupid for spending $200+ on accesories on a $135 scope, but I consider the accesories investment in the future. This month I have spent most of th time looking at jupiter and saturn (I can see the disk but not enough definition). At 75X (900mm/12mm)I get decent results (although they both look really small in the eyepiece. At 150X (900/12 * 2)it is difficult to perfectly focus, they move very fas through the eyepiece, and little things make the eyepiece vibrate. I am interested in photography, so I am leaning for a 5-6 inch refractor in the future. Right now I am also working at figuring out alignment and tracking, maybe that will help minimize vibration since I will only have to adjust RA. Finally, maybe some day this scope will work as a good finder scope.

Dear Sir, Your site is extremely informative, and I'm glad I found it before I made a purchase. Your 'what to look for' article is extremely helpful, as the telescope I was considering had some of the features to stay away from. My wife and I have always had an interest in the stars, sometimes we even just stare at the moon through our binnoculars. Last weekend (October 23) we admired Jupiter through them and we began seriously considering buying a telescope. We had absolutely o idea what to look for (personally, I thought magnification power meant everything!) Thanx again for your web-site and if you have any other suggestions for us, we would greatly appreciate them! Sincerely, Sean Koski

well i finally got a scope after about 2 years of saving up my cash and doing jobs. I am only 12 so it's pretty hard to cough up $700 for a telescope (for those of you who are very critical it cost more because i added an 8x50 finder) by the way your site great i will definitly be comming back soon.

Very nice site! I was looking for some info on telescope anatomy etc to build a lesson plan for my 7th grade science classroom. In order to fulfill state standards, I need a lesson on "how simple lenses are used in a magnifying glass, the eye, telescope, nd microscope,...." I was hoping for a good diagram of the anatomy of a scope and explanation on how lenses are used in them. Any ideas/suggestions? Any help would be appreciated. I really enjoyed your page and I hope to use much of what I learned in my c assroom. Thanks, Aaron Gates

I quit observing the sky for about 7 months because I saw all I could. I saw a lot of things(in the city): Jupiter's moons, Saturn's rings, venus's phases, moon craters, Orion Nebula, Mercury, Andromeda, all with a 60mm, but I can't find any more deep-sky objects(except Pleiades, Praesepe, and other stuff) because of the damn grey sky. Now, I'm back skygazing because I watched the movie Contact.

A very well prepared site. Thank you for your great effort to inform the new amateurs. Organizing deep sky objects by constellation makes it easy to organize our observation sessions. Also Constellation of the Month idea makes the people to know which obj cts are easy to see. Best regards and clear skies.

It's about time someone has put together an aid for viewing with and appreciating smaller telescopes. Newer telescopes may have more light gathering technology, but one must remember their smaller telescope roots. Apart from many of us star gazers having titles such as "Environmental Engineer" or "Organic Chemist", we are all astronomers! Even with small telescopes.

Could you give me some tips on how to balance my telescope. Also what exactly is declination? I love looking up at the sky and I have seen some impressive objects with my telescope, but it's such a pain to find smaller things like the orion nebula. Is his because I havn't balanced my telescope? One more thing, I have 20mm and 4mm lenses but when I try to switch the 20mm to the 4mm it doesn't work. I can't seem to focus it right. What do you think I should do?

Great Idea! I had gotten a bit discouraged with my viewing because it was so hard to find useful information on objects I could really see. Look forward to visiting this site often.

I am currently researching the purchase of a better telescope. Probably a Meade 90mm ETX Astro Telescope. This seems to be in my price range, although I'm still researching Meade scopes.I am pretty much a laymen in this field, but hope to gain some insight into viewing techniques at this site.

I had a question about cleaning telescopes. How do we clean them? Do we need to take them to a camera shop or do it ourselves. The last one we messed up trying to clean it so we got a new one. Last question is what is a demister?

Hi - we are brand new at star gazing. Being sailors, we have alot of opportunity to enjoy viewing the sky at night. We hope to eventually know the stars well enough to become proficient with our sextant. Your website is by far the best we have come across - as beginners, we find it very easy to use in language we understand.
