She is in 3rd grade and presently her class is talking about the stars and planets. We set the scope up tonight and pointed it at the brightest star in the heavens. We had a hard time lining it up w th the focus piece. I am not sure we were even looking at a star. I was wondering, what you know about this Telescope. I think for the money, we will not be able to see much. This in advance, Jack. |

Boy what a decision. Last night I was able to go look through two custom dobsonian style scopes. One a 15" and the other a 17". For my first ever experie ce it was really nice. At this point I ( for some reason) am still drawn towards the shorttube 80 wa refractors, I guess just because they seem so portable and can be used for other viewing also. They are inexpensive and seem like an ok way to get started, I just dont know what I can really see in they? Have you ever used one? Again Ben this site is awsome, I found it from some guys comment on the newsgroup sci. astro.amatuer. Here is the link to my neighbors telescope site that you might enjoy, this is the 7" I got to see through.http://www.skyvalleyscopes.com/ http://www.skyvalleyscopes.com/images/17.5_and_24.25.JPG Buy the way, Ken said the big scope is for sale. I'm 35, and just beginning to obsess about the infinite universe we live in. My question: I am looking at a Meade 90mm telescope with Go-To technology. I almost salivate reading the Go-To's database of over 1500 objects in the sky that it will lock onto as well as track, including other galaxies, all 8 major planets, double stars, ect. But will the telescope they're offering allow me to see deep enough into space to see all the objects in the database? The thought of being able to s e some of these things with my own eyes blows me away! Why didn't I get started years ago? Thanks again, Tim Shepard |

I can't quite get the hang of reporting what is seen or how many other sightings have to be made to identify said objects. This may sound silly - but, with all the photographs and INTERNAL diagrams, I still can't find in 9 references books how to describe the EXTERIOR of a Cassegrain or a Schmidt - the first is a "skeletal type" on a equatorial mounting and the 2nd is a blunt barrel/cylinder. I've identified the finderscope but what are the other two tubes on its surface. I refer to the UK Schmidt. I've got to describe them properly to readers. |

After 15 I discovered other heavenly bodies and lost interest in stargazing. For Christmas this year I bought my son a small telescope. He quickly lost interest in it because it didn't blow up, or shoot lazers. So I was left with a telescope and a bored kid. I began to go out alone and have managed to respark my own interest. Now I think I will go get a 8 or 10 inch telescope. I am thankful for the information on your site. |

At age 40 I think I'll finally get a scope or at least join a local club. Your General Info is helpful. In "Your Eye Versus The Astrophoto" I learned, as I suspected, that I shouldn't expect to see coloured nebulae and galaxies and such unless photographing them. I had no clue about the subject of the "What Does f/8 Mean?" article. Good thing I read it. I've two links you might add to your own: http://www.heavens-above.com - allows inputting your location and then lists observable objects of all types that will pass overhead. http://space.jpl.nasa.gov/ - has a pretty neat browser based Solar System Simulator. It actually creates pretty real (to my eye) looking images. That's all. Thanks for the help! jelb |

Dean Peterson - 01/07/00 06:44:21 My Email:deanp@visi.com From: St. Paul, Minnesota Telescope(s) Owned: used to have 60mm Tasco refractor | Comments: Thank you for your excellent site. I found it Appropriate for your target audience. I think it's a great service. A hobby shop owner in my small town clued me in to the importance of aperature over magnification, and I'm sure glad he did--even though I later got a small Tasco telescope, at least I knew not to worry about magnification and had an idea that it might be a pretty limited instrument. P.S. About the Tasco I owned, I either lost it somehow or an ex-roommate stole it. At any rate, it was $80 at Kmart, and exhibited many of the limitations of cheap telescopes which you describe. I have to give it credit though. If I was content to view the moon and the closer planets at the time, it could do it, even if not exceptionally well. Still, I did get a little more enjoyment out of looking at the night sky with 10x50 Bushnell binoculars. Thanks again for your excellent site. |

Michael Sais - 11/12/99 15:36:04 My Email:mjsais@mailexcite.com From: Columbus OH Telescope(s) Owned: Meade Polaris 60EQ-D | Comments: Like the site. I have been interested in astronomy for quite a while, primarily using my naked eye. My wife gave me this scope cuse she saw the name meade. It is a .96 mall junk. in order not to make her feel bad, I am trying to use it. I bought a hy rid 1.25/.96 diagonal, an orion 1.25 shorty barlow and a very expensive 12mm "Radium" eyepiece. Maybe I am stupid for spending $200+ on accesories on a $135 scope, but I consider the accesories investment in the future. This month I have spent most of th time looking at jupiter and saturn (I can see the disk but not enough definition). At 75X (900mm/12mm)I get decent results (although they both look really small in the eyepiece. At 150X (900/12 * 2)it is difficult to perfectly focus, they move very fas through the eyepiece, and little things make the eyepiece vibrate. I am interested in photography, so I am leaning for a 5-6 inch refractor in the future. Right now I am also working at figuring out alignment and tracking, maybe that will help minimize vibration since I will only have to adjust RA. Finally, maybe some day this scope will work as a good finder scope. |

Sean Koski - 11/02/99 02:27:17 My Email:KBRENBKOZ@aol.com From: Moosup, CT Telescope(s) Owned: contemplating first telescope purchase | Comments: Dear Sir, Your site is extremely informative, and I'm glad I found it before I made a purchase. Your 'what to look for' article is extremely helpful, as the telescope I was considering had some of the features to stay away from. My wife and I have always had an interest in the stars, sometimes we even just stare at the moon through our binnoculars. Last weekend (October 23) we admired Jupiter through them and we began seriously considering buying a telescope. We had absolutely o idea what to look for (personally, I thought magnification power meant everything!) Thanx again for your web-site and if you have any other suggestions for us, we would greatly appreciate them! Sincerely, Sean Koski |

I saw a lot of things(in the city): Jupiter's moons, Saturn's rings, venus's phases, moon craters, Orion Nebula, Mercury, Andromeda, all with a 60mm, but I can't find any more deep-sky objects(except Pleiades, Praesepe, and other stuff) because of the damn grey sky. Now, I'm back skygazing because I watched the movie Contact. |
