After Gus died, I realized that space for seedlings was going to be severely limited, so I made a few halfbred crosses to insure a reasonable number of seedlings - plus a lot of wide crosses that required culturing many seeds in hopes of getting a few breakthroughs. |
86-1: Promises to Keep X Seligmann sdlg: (Esther the Queen x Tuesday Song). Promises to Keep had intricate aril-like dotting and I hoped to reinforce that from the EQ gene pool. The creamy white self with dark chocolate beard was a welcome bonus. Sibling # 86-1-2 became White Chocolate. |
86-4: Sal-Leo-Five X Rebecca's Veil. Triploid pod parent, unbalanced tetraploid pollen parent. Why bother? 'Cause I'd found evidence of "impossible" crosses
in Gene's records and wanted to test conventional wisdom. Few seeds and only one seedling that survived to bloom size. But it was a special
one and 86-4-1 became Moonlight Madness. |
86-7 Edith Seligmann X 82-22-15: (Martha Mia x Moon Dust). A cross made with his stock for sentimental reasons, as this was my first season working without Gus. It produced several nice things, and # 86-7-1 became
Tattletale. |
86-8: Gene's Little Secret X Rose of Sharon. An interesting array of seedlings, two of which were introduced: 86-8-2 = Impudent Elf; and 86-8-17 = Bayberry Baby. |
86-9: Persian Pansy X Rose of Sharon. Persian Pansy has a well-deserved reputation of producing mostly lookalike offspring, but I'd seen just enough exceptions that I wasn't going to let a tetraploid aril go uncrossed. In this case, it paid off with #86-9-13,
Doug Goodnight. |
86-10: Persian Pansy X Koko Knoll. Another one of my infamous, mix-up-the-genes-to-see-what-happens crosses with Persian Pansy. The expected Persian Pansy lookalikes, of course, plus one smoky novelty, 86-10-6, that became
Inscrutable. |
86-11: Ballalaika Music X Sunrise in Glory. Ballalaika Music has long been one of my favorite tetraploid arils. In this case, it was hard to restrict my selections to three: 86-11-1 = Classic Elegance, 86-11-4 = Daringly Different; and 86-11-6 =
Genuine Gemstones. |
