89-1: Sostenique X Tribe of Judah. Early tests had shown that TB amoenas and zonals were most effective in allowing signals to show through in quarterbreds, so when I got good bloom on both Sostenique and Tribe of Judah I was determined to grow as many seedlings to bloom size as possible to explore the potential of the cross. I got a variety of bitones and bicolors, some with large solid signals and others with intricately stippled ones. In several cases, I had lookalike sibs so selected only the best for introduction. Sibling # 89-1-7 became Palimpsest; 89-1-8 became Vivacious Vi; 89-1-10 became Cope Goodwin; and 89-1-30 became Magnificent Obsession.

89-12: Casa Vicente X Joint Venture. Joint Venture came from a conventional cross with the TB as pod parent, but it exhibited significantly more aril characteristics than usual so I tried it with a number of halfbreds. At that time the quantum system was still in effect and all offspring would qualify as quarterbreds so it seemed like a good way to get quarterbreds with more aril characteristics. It worked. Of course, before any of the resulting seedlings could be introduced the rules changed. Now any selection has to be fertility-tested to determine whether it is a quarterbred or functional halfbred. In a classic coincidence in the seedling patch, the three I introduced from this cross were consecutive sibs: 89-12-6 = Don't Be Shy; 89-12-7 = Simply Luscious; and 89-12-8 = At Last.

89-15: Hunt's (Lovely Blanche X Eunice ) X Sunrise in Glory. One of Gene's last seedlings was a soft coral pink from his Lovely Blanche X Eunice. It had only limited fertility, but enough to offer hope for combining true tangerine pink and aril characteristics in the same flower. Sibling #89-15-2 became Dress Pinks.

89-16: Ballalaika Music X Thunderstorm. Another of my experiments with tetraploid arils, which normally produce only a few seedlings. In this case, one was enough: 89-16-1 became Things to Come.

89-18 Werckmeister's Beauty X Child of God. Werckmeister's Beauty put on an exceptionally good show that year so I was able to set several pods using Child of God and bloom a striking variety of colors and patterns. My favorite was 89-18-16, which I've already registered as Skies Always Blue.

89-33: Sunrise in Glory X 85-3-17: (Boaz x Jean Ralls). Experimenting with two recessive lines. Sunrise in Glory, a carrier for pink, and a seedling with reddish-purple dotting and veining combined to a variety of seedlings. Sibling # 89-33-1 had rust-on-yellow veining with a clear yellow heart so it became Pure At Heart.
