The main problem a newcomer encounters when trying to interpret Classification Codes is that the classification system itself has evolved over time. The original codes are often important because they cannot be simply translated into modern equivalents. Each of today's codes has a number of earlier codes that match it, and each of the earlier codes included more than one of today's codes. There is simply no one-to-one correspondence. The pedigree itself must be consulted, and in some cases a chromosome count is needed to resolve the matter.
