Far more has been published in iris books about the arillate species than any other aril/arilbred subject. I won't duplicate that here, but merely attempt to relate the world of scholars to that of irisarians. For a list of books that include detailed information about these species, scroll to the bottom of this page.
Botanically, the arillate species are distinguished as those having small, cream-colored collars on their seeds. Their exact status in the overall scheme of things has varied over the years as different classifications systems have reigned. Two of the arillate groups, the Oncocyclus and Regelia species, are the ancestors of our modern arilbreds. They thus earned the nickname "Aril Species", which has been officially adopted by the Aril Society in its classification system. To learn more about this, see Classification Systems, Onco Species, and Regelia Species.
For a cross-reference list that relates over 100 species names to presently-recognized names, see the Species List. For example, I registered Wiloh Wilkes' seedling "MG22W7benjii" as involving I. benjaminii because that was the name applied when it was collected. From the cross-reference list you'll learn that this corresponds to the Mathew species, I. bismarkiana. |
