Patricia Craig X Capitola

The goal: testing the interaction of anthocyanin pathways from TB ancestry and aril ancestry.  This included crossing CAPITOLA with TBs in a variety of colors.  Although earlier hybridizers did introduce arilbreds by crossing CAPITOLA only a variety of TB parents, in my own experiments only the white selfs gave anything worthy of consideration.

At that time, I was hybridizing for information rather than introductions.  I kept 10 siblings, chosen for their diversity.  Ultimately, I introduced one.

This photo was taken by Cope Goodwin, in Georgia.  I had given up working with quarterbreds when he sent it to me, and inspired me to resume the quest for flowers with aril traits on plants that could survive hot, humid summers.
