Whirlwind Romance as a Parent
|
Whirlwind Romance (McAllister, 1990)Pewter standards are touched with brass along the midrib. Brass falls have a heavy wash of orange rust, a burnt-orange-to-black signal, and bushy orange beard. From Persian Pansy X Arab Dusk. Unusually fertile pollen for the type and able to pass this globular form onto its 1/2- and 3/4-bred offspring. Surprisingly compatible with TBs. Reluctant to pod, except to tetraploid arils. |
Theoretically, Whirlwind Romance should be limitedly fertile at best and
this is reflected in the early pattern of crosses using it. It first
bloomed in Col. Seligmann's garden in 1984, putting on such an impressive
display that he immediately nicknamed it "El Toro d'Oro". I scoffed,
knowing its pedigree. Lil opined: "Shhhh -- the iris doesn't
know". Considering that this was its maiden bloom, though, we didn't
test it.
By 1988, Gus was gone but some of our wide crosses had done well enough that I decided to test our best seedlings of this type. In the group: the one that would become Whirlwind Romance, one of its sibs, and some more distant relatives. Several proved limitedly fertile, but Whirlwind Romance was surprisingly so. Lil quipped that every seed it produced was Gus saying "I told you so". For the 1989 season, I turned my attention to other lines. It would take another year for the first offspring of Whirlwind Romance to bloom. 1990 brought the maiden bloom of the eldest group of Whirlwind Romance offspring. Lots of them -- and such a high percentage of good ones that it was hard to decide what to discard. Guess that's obvious by the number of crosses I made in 1990 and 1991. So what happened in 1992? I introduced Whirlwind Romance in 1991 and, in spite of being the most expensive item in the catalog, it not only oversold but generated more requests for pollen than I could fulfill. Foolishly, I saved none for my own crosses that year By 1993, I was testing it further and crossing it with many different types to test compatibility. Yes, there are more crosses involving Whirlwind Romance. If no seedlings survived, the cross isn't on the list. If I banked the seeds or gave them away, it's not on the list. |
|
88-1 Red Earth X Whirlwind Romance. One of my most successful tests of Whirlwind Romance in terms of number of good seedlings - but too many looked too much alike so only one was introduced: #88-1-3, as Visitor's Choice.
88-3 Love Shines In X Whirlwind Romance
88-4 Lawrence Welk X Whirlwind Romance
88-7: My Joy X Whirlwind Romance. An experiment to determine whether unbalanced tetraploids would be as useful as triploids. It produced several noteworthy seedlings but only one was ultimately introduced. Sib #88-7-4 became Whirlwind Tour.
88-18 Road to Damascus X Whirlwind Romance
90-3: Sandy Dandy X Whirlwind Romance. Produced a striking array of colors and patterns, most with the characteristic rounded form of Whirlwind Romance. Several are still under consideration for introduction, but 90-3-19 has already made its debut as Point Well Taken.
90-20 Sunrise in Glory X Whirlwind Romance
90-37: Soul Kiss X Whirlwind Romance. Conventional wisdom has it that it's futile to cross near-arils with TBs, but my experience says otherwise. Whirlwind Romance has proven to be more effective with halfbreds than TBs, but in this case produced the striking #90-37-8, which I registered as Raring to Go.
90-43: Wayfaring Stranger X Whirlwind Romance
90-57: Singing Bird X Whirlwind Romance
90-68: Whirlwind Romance X Koko Knoll. The only pod I've ever managed to set on Whirlwind Romance using halfbred pollen.
90-69: Koko Knoll X Whirlwind Romance. The reciprocal cross, much more productive.
91-43: Chapeau X Whirlwind Romance
