Examples of Current ASI Codes for Arils

O

Iris gatesii

A highly variable species native to northern Turkey. Most have white to silver-grey ground with darker grey veining than this unusual specimen of rust-on-tan. The form and pattern are, however, typical. Flowers are extremely large, often 8" in height.

Onco Species

Any collected or selected clone belonging to the Oncocyclus Section, or any offspring of parents of the same onco species.

OH

Judean Charmer (Austin, 1956)

I. atropurpurea X W-157. The pollen parent was an onco hybrid of unknown parentage. This has proven relatively easy to grow, so much so that it has often been distributed mislabeled as something else.

Onco Hybrid

Anything with only onco ancestors, regardless of how many species may be involved.

R

I. hoogiana

A smooth-flowered species from the mountains of southwestern Asia. Valued by hybridizers because it is tetraploid [which makes it relatively compatible with most arilbreds], highly gardenable, and usually allows delicate markings of other species to be transmitted to offspring.

Regelia Species

Any collected or selected clone belonging to the Regelia Section, or any offspring of parents of the same regelia species.

RH

Bronze Beauty (Van Tubergen, NR)

Hybrid of I. hoogiana and I. stolonifera. Ancestor of many modern arils and arilbreds, because it was widely distributed even though it wasn't registered.

Regelia Hybrid

Anything with only regelia ancestors, regardless of how many species may be involved. May be diploids, triploids, or tetraploids as there are both diploid and tetraploid regelia species.

OG

Persian Lace (Austin, 1956)

An advanced-generation cross that's predominantly onco, from Teucros X Austin H-16-O.

Oncogelia

First-generation hybrids with an onco pod parent and regelia pollen parent, and those advanced-generation hybrids that are more onco than regelia onco.

RC

Werckmeister's Beauty

A predominantly regelia tetraploid from Bronze Beauty X (Teucros x I. susiana).

Regeliocyclus

First-generation hybrids with a regelia pod parent and an onco pollen parent, and those advanced-generation hybrids that are more regelia than onco.
