Why Collect???

Why do Transformers collectors cherish their hobby? I think the answer is plain and simple. Because it's fun!! The Transformer is a unique type of action figure. The toys take the shape of many different things as well as their main robot form. It could be said that you're actually getting multiple figures for the price of one. The variety and originality included with each and every figure is phenomenal. Something very rarely seen in an action figure line. I believe this is one of the main reasons why the newer Transformers enthusiasts collect (as well as many G1 veterans).

However, I'd have to say that the main reason us veteran Generation 1 enthusiasts collect is because of the memories that are brought back. Everytime I pop open a box that I was sent via the post office and pull out the Transformer I ordered, I can usually picture a time and place when I had it originally as a kid. For me....the Transformers took up a good five years of my childhood. That's a long time considering that my average attention span was much shorter. Perhaps you could say that we hold onto our childhood. However, I really don't think that's a bad thing. Especially since each and every one of us veterans can give you a good reason why we appreciate the hobby! That's what makes us unique collectors.

There are also the Transformers collectors who enjoy the future value of the pieces. Generation 1 figures prove that there could possibly be an increase and higher demand in the future for Transformers (see worth anything?). This drives a lot of people to collect. They can say it may be worth something one day. While BW, G2, and MW are still yet to be determined as to whether they will be sought after in the future (although first run BW and G2 have already begun an increase in price), Generation 1 proves that there is enough demand in the Transformers idea for this to happen.

You don't have to be a die-hard collector to be have an appreciation for the Transformers toy line. My girlfriend has been dragged into the hobby (because of me) and only has a dozen or so figures. However, she is just as knowledgeable and appreciative of the figures as anyone. Keep that in mind. Don't be ashamed to say "All I have is an Optimus Prime". If you can tell me why you appreciate him than you've earned my respect.

So.......what does this have to do with "Why to Collect?". To some....maybe nothing at all. To others it will prove that there are many reasons to collect or to be a fan of the Transformers. Whether it's for the uniqueness, for the possible future value, or for the memories. Each of us will give you our own reason for staying with the Transformers hobby and that's what counts. If you have any questions or need help getting started collecting (this includes any aspect of the Transformers universe), drop me a line and I'll do what I can.
