Sweeps Mind: A First Guide to Meditation Practice by Jean Smith (Editor) This Tricycle (Magazine) Book is an excellent introduction to meditation. With a concentration on Buddhist meditation techniques, the editor has compiled an excellent sampling of writings by the major contemporary teachers (and a few classical texts). The contributors representing all the major schools of Buddhism include The Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, Sogyal Rinpoche, Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Shunryu Suzuki, Sylvia Boorstein, Sharon Salzburg, et al. I do notice that Lama Surya Das was not included here (see his book below). Although the book is intended as an introduction, it is of value to meditators at all levels and highly recommended.

We highly recommend that you check out Lama Surya Das' comprehensive guide to Buddhism, Awakening the Buddha Within: Eight steps to Enlightenment. This is one of the best books we've ever read on Buddhism, and received 5 star rating at Amazon. We are recommneding the hardbound copy as this is a beautiful book you will want to keep. It is heavily discounted and sells for $18.20. The paperback version, just came out and sells for $15.00, lightly discounted [approx 15%]. This is a great book, 5 stars ~ why not spring for the hard cover. Lama Surya Das has a great website at his Dzogchen Foundation. [It is one of the Spiritwalk Links] You can check out his writing here as there are generous portions of earlier writings posted here.
