Program Nordic Forum for Mediation First Conference, Oslo, 12 - 14. November 1999
Presentation and discussion about mediation takes place on three levels:
1. Exhibitions from each of the four countries: Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
They are open in all breaks and in other selected occasions. Exhibitions shows and
distribute documentation, booklets, reports, videos, etc., and they are manned with
personnel ready to answer question regarding the individual country.
2. Video cinema - 6 video machines.
3. Presentations by lecturers or panel members i plenary or large groups.
4. Workshops by the length of one hour and a half with presentation of and work with
different topics. Workshops take place in different parallel tracks.
Friday 13.00 – 18.30
13.00 – 13.30 Presentation of the program and the Nordic Forum for Mediation by
the chairman. 10 – 15 minutes by Hans Boserup.
Introduction by a political celebrity.
13.30 – 18.30 4 x 4 x 10 minutes presentation of the main topics, the practical
conduct of mediation and the main problems by different representatives from the four
countries:
Family mediation
Victim-offender mediation -
Peer (school) mediation
Commercial/corporate mediation.

14.10 – 14.50 Victim-offender mediation (Christina Nehlin (S), Junani Iivari (SF), Dagmar Rasmussen (DK) and Siri Kemény (N).

15.10 – 15.50 Peer mediation (Eleonore Lind (S), Pelle Johansen (DK), Gro Rossland (N) and Sari Vesikansa (SF).
15.50 – 18.30 Commercial and corporate mediation. (Karin Hyllengreen (S), Seppo Kemppinen (SF), Hans Boserup (DK) and Anna Blanca Dahl (N).
Saturday 09.00 – 18.00
09.00 – 10.00 Different methods and styles used by mediators inside and out of
Europe. Mainly dealt with according to the strategies of approaching the conflict direct
(narrow angle) or indirect (wide angle). Settlement-driven or transformation-driven
(including facilitative or evaluative mediation). Hans Boserup (DK) and Marc Umbreit (US).
10.00 – 10.45 What is mediation and what is mediation not. Larry Fong (CAN) and Vibeke Vindeløv (DK). Demarcation to therapy and advise giving.
10.45 – 11.00 Break
11.00 – 13.00 Ways and skills in communication. Presentation of the fundamental commonalties and differences in active listening and systemic questioning including procedure and values. Susse Humle (DK) introduce and coordinate presentation and discussion between Larry Fong (CAN), Marian Roberts (UK) and Eli Keller (S). Questions and experiences from the auditory.
This part of the conference is introduced by video demonstrations of the two different methods and philosophies of communication.

Track 1: Peer-mediation – Practical part:
Demonstration of video.
Role-play with a teacher as mediator.
Role-play with pupils as mediators.
Reflecting team comments and point out differences and commonalties between the different
countries.
Advantage and disadvantage by teacher or pupil as mediator.
Liv Johannson (N), Eleonora Lind (S), Sari Vesikansa (SF) and Pelle Johansen (DK).
Track 2: Selected scenarios from a family mediation. A mediator from the different countries will in turns and in role-play demonstrate the different procedures. Steen Clausen (DK), Bernt Wahlsteen (S) and Arne Odd Tjersland (N) shifts as mediators and coordinate the discussion with the plenary.
Track 3: Selected scenarios from a victim-offender mediation. A mediator from the different countries will in turns and in role-play demonstrate the different procedures. Nina Berger (N), Nina Holgerson (S) and Nina Raaskov (DK) shifts as mediators and coordinate the discussion with the plenary.
Track 4: Selected scenarios from a commercial / corporate mediation. A mediator from
the different countries will in turns and in role-play demonstrate the different
procedures. The mediators shifts as mediators and coordinate the discussion with the
plenary.

Track 1: Peer-mediation - Theoretical/principled part:
Jan Mossige (N), Eleonora Lind (S) and Bo Ørsnæs (DK)
How affects peer-mediation the culture in schools? How is peer-mediation programs
implemented? What is the role of the teacher? Which schools are suitable for
peer-mediation?
Track 2: Evaluation of mediation. How works mediation? Johan Ekeland (N).
Track 3: Mediation of less and more severe crimes. Difficult conflicts (strong emotions,
high level of conflict, large traumas, etc.). Christina Nehlin (S), and Marc Umbreit (US).
Spor 4: Role of the child in mediation.
Edel Bondesen (N) and Grethe Nordhelle (N).
Sunday 09.00 - 10.30
Track 1: Neutrality, balance, impartial and multipartial in family mediation . Trust and
rapport. Use of private meetings befor, during and after mediation. Odd Arne Tjersland,
PhD (N).
Track 2: Family Group Conferencing. – Practical part.
Gunilla Östholm (S) and if convenient Hans Boserup (DK).
Role-play about a case of juvenile delinquency. Plenum is reflecting team.
Track 3: Family mediation with main focus of defining the real and deeper issues to the
conflict, and focus on methods to let all relevant information come to the surface. The
difference on one side: to start with storytelling and wait until later with defining
issues, and on the other side: to start with a combination of information gathering and
defining issues. Short introduction. Subsequently 30 minutes English video. Subsequently
discussion with plenum.

Track 1: Guilt and forgiveness between people in conflict. Paul Leer Salvesen (N)
Track 2: Training in mediation. Standards of acceptable conduct. Susse Humle (DK), Lin
Adrian (DK) and Marc Umbreit (US).
Track 3: Family Group Conferencing. - Theoretical/principle part.

Track 4: Parties not fit for mediation? Susse Humle (DK) and Palle Gad (DK).
12.30 – 13.30 Plenum – Conclusion of the scientific part of the conference.
13.30 - 14.30 Lunch
14.30 – 18.00 Nordic Forum for Mediation. Electing committees, annual meeting,
election to the board, standards, bylaws and other subjects of organizational
interest.
