INSIDE A BARN IN THE COUNTRY
Alyssa Satin Capucilli is the author of this book as well as the popular Biscuit series and Peekaboo Bunny. She is a former dancer and has taught movement and dance to very young children.
When I first saw the manuscript for this
book, I was immediately interested in illustrating the story for
several reasons. I liked the rebus form --replacing some words
with tiny pieces of art within the text. Rebus books have a long
history in children's literature and I was eager to try one. I
also enjoyed the cumulative story of one animal waking the next
until all of them are running mindlessly around the farm yard.
After one reading of the manuscript I was already imagining the
silly ways they could wake each other up. And finally, I felt
that the way I draw
"bugged-out" eyeballs was perfect for the startled
expressions on the faces of the animals. I knew I could create
drawings that would bring excitement and humor to the story.
