MY WORKING MOM
I have
known the author of this book, Peter Glassman, for years. Before
I became a writer, I would visit his fine bookstore, Books of Wonder,
in New York City and purchase children's books for my collection.
After I became a published author, I had many occasions to
autograph books at his store. On one of those visits Peter said
he was working on a story of his own and asked if I would
consider illustrating it. I took one look at his manuscript and
happily said yes. The reason for my excitement was simple. This
is a genuine picture book. Let me explain. In its purest form, a
picture book is one where the words by themselves do not tell the
whole story. The story happens only
when the pictures are combined with the words. (Most children's
books that are called picture books are in truth merely
illustrated story books.) Peter gave me only one order before I
created the art. He said, "Make the mom a witch"
because in the words of the story he never named the mom's job.
All the rest of the scenes were left up to me. Because the words
only said "weird dinners" I could draw any kind
of weird dinner. When the kids were putting on a school play it
could be any play I wanted it to be. I decided to draw them
performing The Wizard of Oz because Peter's hobby is collecting
Oz books and toys. I had a lot of fun with this book. Artists
love to work on real picture books because they get to help the
author create the story.
