MY DOG NEVER SAYS PLEASE
Written by Suzanne
Williams, this story
came to my attention just a few weeks after my family welcomed a
stray puppy into the house. Our first family dog! So, for me it
was a perfect time to illustrate a book about a dog and its
owner. For the next few months I carefully observed our dog,
Hershey. I loved the goofy satisfied look she would get on her
face when she was eating or when we scratched her belly. I
watched her chase after cats with wild abandon and dig big holes
in the backyard. (She would dig a hole, drop in a bone and bury
it by pushing dirt over it with her nose.) When I finally started
illustrating Suzanne's story, I didn't draw Ol' Red to look like
Hershey, but because I had watched my dog so carefully, I knew
how Ol' Red would act.I knew how clean she could lick a plate. I knew about
fleas. And I knew that her all time favorite thing was to race
out of the house and run free. After finishing the book, I had
the good fortune to visit Washington state and meet Suzanne
Williams for the first time. Besides being a wonderful author,
she is also a mom and a children's librarian. And she makes the
best cherry pie I ever had. I licked the plate clean.
