NO JUMPING ON THE BED!

This was the first book that I both wrote and illustrated and I thank my son, Walter, for the idea. My wife, Carol, and I had just moved from Florida and found ourselves living in an old apartment building in Yonkers, New York. Walter was four years old. As with most kids that age, Walter loved jumping on the bed. But Walter's bedroom floor was someone else's ceiling! The whole idea of apartment living was new to me back then. People living upstairs. More people living downstairs! New experiences like that seem to spark my imagination. People often ask, of the books I've made, "Which book is your favorite?" I answer that I love all my books or I wouldn't have gone to the work of making them. But change that word "favorite." I like to say NO JUMPING ON THE BED will always be special to me. Why? Because it was my first picture book. And any time you do something for the very first time, after trying hard for a long time--that is special!
