THE SIGNMAKER'S ASSISTANT
Once when I lived in Yonkers, NY and rode
the bus each day to work in New York City, I noticed a row of
stores and businesses in a neighborhood in the Bronx. What caught
my eye was the store signs. They all had a similar and
distinctive style even though the stores sold different things. I
realized that all the signs must have been painted by one person
who always painted in the same style. He (or she) did a good job
and everyone bought the colorful signs. As I thought about it
more, I realized that the sign painter had a lot of influence on
that little
neighborhood. As a painter, he not only controlled what the whole
neighborhood looked like, he also directed people where to go.
And I began to wonder how else a signmaker might have control. Of
course, I started thinking of silly signs that could control
people and make them do goofy things. That's how the story got
started!
