MEET THE TEAM[Russ & Tracy Pennington]
When my brother, Steve, asked me five years ago to consider coming to Thailand to teach the team's children, I dismissed the idea because I was involved in a church planting in New Haven, Connecticut. But, God thought otherwise and on July 27, 2000 I stepped off the plane in Bangkok, Thailand. I was a little teary-eyed and sad after saying good-bye to my friends and church family, but when I saw the beautiful excited faces of the children, I knew I had made the right decision.
It has been a joy and an honor to teach the children for the past seven months. Michael Allen and Brently Pennington are in second grade and Ashlee Walter and Breck Pennington are in first grade. Kanaan Allen, who is in Kindergarten, joins us for "Super Saturdays". The children are so eager to come to school and to learn. I spend a lot of time in preparation just to keep up with them. We cover Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Math and Writing from 9:00 to 2:00 every day except for Sundays and Tuesdays. Samantha Allen teaches the children Art and Music and the dads take care of P.E. on Fridays. With everyone?s participation, the children are getting a quality and well-rounded education.
In November we renovated the Christian Center, where I live and teach school. Now we have a Pre-school/K class downstairs taught by Tracy, Sherry and our summer intern, Rachel. Si Pennington (3) and Josh Walter (4) and Kanaan enjoy a shortened day from 10:30 to 1:00 on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. In addition to teaching school, I am also involved with Steve?s ministry on Asia University Campus. I join him for English Club on Thursdays when school is in session and for Share Group Dinner and Bible Study that follow at Steve and Sam?s home for interested students. It has been a blessing to develop friendships with the students who come each week to the Allen home. I?ve enjoyed going on outings with students on special occasions.
It has been a phenomenal experience to be here in Thailand to teach the children and to be a part of the mission work. The Walters, Allens and Penningtons have reflected a dedication and love for God and the Thai people which has inspired me in my own Christian walk and my pursuit of God's will for my life.
