Denby, Charles

Charles, diplomatist, was born in Botetourt county, Va., June 16, 1830; son of Nathaniel and Jane (Harvey) Denby. His grandfather emigrated from England and settled in Virginia, where his father was born. His mother was the daughter of Matthew and Magdalen (Hawkins) Harvey, and a descendant of Benjamin Burden, an Englishman, who brought with him to Virginia a grant of many acres of land on the Shenandoah and James rivers, known as Burden's grant.
